K/1 are doing this chant as a call/echo Warm-up. We do this a total of 6 times (it goes by quickly!):

 

Leader: H-E-L-L-O (Rhythm - Ta, ta, ti-ti, ta)

Leader: This is how we say hello! (Rhythm – Ti-ti, ti-ti, ti-ti, Ta) (Wave your hand)

Leader: Move your feet to the beat! (Rhythm – Ti-ti, ta, ti-ti, ta) (March in place)

Leader: Can you feel my heartbeat? (Rhythm – Ti-ti, Ti-ti, Ta, Ta) (Pat your chest like a heartbeat – steady beat)

 

1^st time: I use my speaking voice

2^nd time: Whisper voice

3^rd time: Singing voice (Sol-mi-la) (ex. H-E-L-L-O – Sol, mi, sol-sol, me/ This is how we say hello- Sol-sol, mi, la, sol-sol, mi, etc.)

4^th: Shouting voice

5^th time: Whisper voice

6^th time: Singing Voice

I’m doing this without music, but I feel like you could add an instrumental track to it at a comfortable tempo and change the volume as you go along. I also could teach dynamics to it as well and review it when we get to Unit 3.

2nd Grade - "Hop Old Squirrel" adapted from Game Plan. S's perform a mixer dance where they can play familiar Ta/Tadi rhythms but they have certain special moves to do on the Half note rhythms in the song. Each student will need one dice, a pencil, and a Rhythm Dice Activity worksheet

Level 1: Roll dice and fill in rhythm patterns.                     

Level 2: Read your rhythm patterns. 

Level 3: Clap your rhythm patterns while saying the patterns in your head (not out loud.)

Level 4: Practice playing your patterns on drum sticks. 

Level 5: Select one line to perform for the class!

Once the activity is completed, we all sit in a circle with our papers and drum sticks and go around the circle performing our patterns!

 

After you teach or review quarter note & rest, and 8^th notes, I found this rhythm stick play along very fun and engaging for my students.

I didn’t think playing rhythm sticks can be this fun but most of my students loved it.

 

For 2^nd – 3^rd gr : “My Own Drum” is a song from the Netflix Movie called “Vivo” and the music was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and he also is the voice of the character Vivo

 

It may be challenging for the kids to play this correctly so I followed these steps which made it easier for them.

Level 1 - Play the Steady Beat with the song.

Level 2 - Play the rhythms that you see on the slide on your sticks

       Level 3 - Play the way that it is written:

 normal oval notes = hit the floor

notes with X = hit sticks

 

Then if you have more time,  you can introduce the kids to Lin-Manuel Miranda since it’s Hispanic Heritage Month.
