Is university worth the debt?

University is worth the debt as although initially you have to pay a lot, it can be seen as an investment in you future. Going to university gives you a degree which in turn helps you to get a well paying job. This means that the cost of the debt is negligible as your job can quickly pay off this debt. University also gives you the opportunity to meet new people and even though it may cost a lot, these people may be significant throughout your life. This extends to connections in employment providing university students with work opportunities not accessible otherwise. In addition, if you choose to take a gap year or a year abroad it can give you valuable life experiences. This also means that you don’t have to go straight into university after college which means you can prepare yourself. While university can be very busy, studies have found that over 55% of university students have a part time job showing that you can still earn money while studying.

Art is a subjective medium. However, modern art slanders the original meaning of art. When you think of art, you think of the ‘Mona Lisa’, you think of DaVinci an icon to the world, the gorgeous ‘starry night’ art piece. In modern times, you have art pieces such as ‘banana sellotaped to wall’ (which is what you’d expect) selling for $120,000 and ‘are we going to dance tonight?’ which was an Italian inspired piece also valued very highly. Homeless runs rampant across the globe with approximately 1.6 billion people being registered as homeless out of a population of 8 billion people. A simple donation of even half of the value of ‘banana sellotaped to wall’ would massively support these desperate and innocent families. And yet, the richest of our population chooses to actively indulge in gluttony despite the inhumane challenges others face. Does this seem fair to you?

Can an individual make a difference in the environment?

When you think of the environment, what do you think of? Trees, flowers or mountains? The environment is changing every day but is for better, or for worse? Statistics say that around 75% of all the Earth’s land surface has been significantly altered by human actions. So could one individual, like yourself, really make a difference? The answer is yes.

Every person that shares their views on the environment, can influence a positive change by causing groups of people to act to save the planet. For example, social media stars and pop stars have such an impact on others to create a source of encouragement to change our ways and save the planet before it’s too late. But famous or not, just one person can make a difference as if no one acted it wouldn’t influence many other people to act for their beliefs and form environmental groups that might just save the planet.

People say they care for the planet, but it’s also people whose actions are destroying it. Would really want your kids to grow up in the poor remains of how you’ve left the planet? Their lives altered forever due to the negative impact of humans and their actions, but it’s not too late. It believed that one person, joining the fight might just help save the earth and that could be you.

Can zoos be ethical?

While some may argue that zoos are ethical with their rehabilitation programmes where endangered animals are safe, it is certain that captivity has a deeply damaging effect on the animals and strips them of their animal rights. How would you feel if you were locked up for the rest of your life? The fabricated environments that animals find themselves dumped in upon captivity are often disgustingly different to that of wild habitats, which leads to a dependence on humans weaking vital relationships between animals of the same species - extremely necessary for survival. These animals are forced to be in close proximity to humans at all times, often resulting in devastating psychological issues and physically limited lives. Some animals are born behind bars, preventing them from ever getting the chance to embrace their natural wild instincts and feel free within nature. For example, predators such as lions and tigers have 18,000 times less space than they would have in the wild - what quality of life is that?

When the job market is so competitive , a degree is invaluable.

As well as being a large factor in being able to find a job, certain countries are very academically focused, for example Italy has a cultural push towards getting a degree as there is a stigma towards those who don’t have a degree. With the inability to find a job without a degree in Italy, you would surely make back the money lost through debt as without it you would struggle to find a well paying job. In countries like Italy you feel the cultural pressure of attending university, while in the UK we start looking for work as young as 16 whilst trying to complete college, and without this cultural press.

Social media is bad for our health because it has increased the opportunity for others to be open to harm especially towards their mental health, and because of this it can have an impact on our physical health. It stops you from exercising as you are tied to your phone, it also prevents you from interactions with others in person. Throughout our history, we have evolved from enjoying leisure activities to being fixated to our phones. According to statistics, 12.6% of children aged from 11-16 have admitted that they have experienced bullying online which indicates the negative consequences to spending so much time on social media. Many teenagers have a screen time that is more than six hours, how long do you spend on your phone?

The thought process and detail that goes into a piece of art can take hours or days or weeks. Do you believe abstract art is worth millions? The lack of effort and skill that’s put into abstract art in comparison to the fine details historic artists would use. Nowadays anything can be considered “abstract art” for example the “art piece” which literally consisted of a banana duct taped to a canvas which surprisingly sold for millions. Would you pay millions for this piece? The global abstract art market size was valued at 2.8billion dollars compared to the fine art market sales at 13.3 billion dollars. Abstract art is a waste resources and time, it lacks imagination and skill and artists who can produce a few simple paint blotches on a canvas should not be getting paid. Fine art artists who put the most thought and consideration into their pieces are the ones who should be getting paid large sums. Abstract artists should sit down and leave the art to the professionals.
