Greenhouse gases are gases that absorb heat from Earth and then send it back, making Earth warmer. These gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. They are called greenhouse gases because they are similar to the glass walls of a botanical greenhouse that trap heat and warm the air inside the greenhouse. This process is known as the greenhouse effect, and some scientists believe it has contributed to global warming in recent decades. Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of Earth.
