This video really made me feel so sad. I usually get frustrated when I see that a scholar isn't trying to learn. But, after watching this video, it is so much deeper than that. This is exactly why it is so important to really get to know your scholars because there is a HUGE difference between a child who can't learn and who doesn't want to learn!

Watching the video makes me feel sad because I see the struggle in my class with students who are not able to read on grade level. My question is how did they go from first grade to 5th grade and is still unable to read? Despite addressing this issue there's still a problem. There is no help from paren who is also in denial. They get no help at home. Everything islet on the teacher.

The first thing I would do is help boost confidence and give a lot of positive reinforcements. A huge issue is the confidence level! After working on that and building some self esteem, I would start with the BASICS of reading; phonics. I would use small group instruction and intentional teaching in my small groups.

I do see this type of reaction to reading with many of my students in the classroom. One way to approach this issue is to build CONFIDENT readers. Providing students with positive encouragement and reinforcement. That is half the battle. Knowing our students emotional background building confidence the needed piece. Encouraging students for reaching small goals such as identifying glued sounds, decoding and identifying prefix and suffix. All of these reading celebrations make a difference. Also hit the ground running with foundation and Heggerty awareness curriculum. We need to make every moment and opportunity a transferable moment to build reading comprehension
