Trust vs Mistrust is the first of Erikson's 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development. This period occurs from birth until roughly one year. This period in life is when infants determine if they can trust their caregivers or not. Babies who have their needs met and feel safe are able to complete this stage.

Our textbook describes this stage as " From warm, responsive care, infants gain a sense of trust, or confidence, that the world is good. Mistrust occurs if infants are neglected or handled harshly". I feel as though I was able to complete this stage successfully by having attentive parents that met my needs in a regular and predictive manner.

Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt is Erikson's second stage. This period starts around one and lasts until approximately age three. This stage is deemed successful if the develops a sense of independence. This occurs if they are supported in learning skills like dressing themselves, feeding themselves, and toilet training. If they are not supported or are shamed for their unsuccessful attempts, the child will doubt their abilities.

The textbook describes "Using new mental and motor skills, children want to decide for themselves. Parents can foster autonomy by permitting reasonable free choice and not forcing or shaming the child". By allowing me the independence to learn, I developed autonomy. When I was not able to do something, I was encouraged and helped, not shamed. My parents waited until I was ready to toilet train, and with encouragement was able to learn that quickly. That is why I feel I successfully completed this stage.

The third of Erikson's stages occurs from age three to six. At this age, kids are learning to trust themselves. They are learning about who they are. This is most often accomplished by exploratory play. This play allows them to see what and who they might become, developing an initiative to start working towards the person they want to be. This stage's completion requires a parent's support to allow children to explore on their own, without being overbearing or dictating what or how they play.

The book says "Through make-believe play, children gain insight into the person they can become. Initiative—a sense of ambition and responsibility—develops when parents support their child’s sense of purpose. If parents demand too much self-control, children experience excessive guilt". For me personally, I believe starting school was the major task I completed to end this stage successfully. I remember so much time playing, with my siblings and friends freely. This play encouraged me to try new things, developing a purpose and who I thought I wanted to be when I grew up.

The fourth stage looks at how children feel they compare with their peers and takes place from ages six to eleven. It lies in learning new things like school concepts, skills, and sports. By developing a level of self-confidence and competence they are able to successfully complete this stage. While a child may not be the best at everything, finding at least one thing they are confident in helps build a positive self-concept.

The text reads " At school, children learn to work and cooperate with others. Inferiority develops when negative experiences at home, at school, or with peers lead to feelings of incompetence". After moving states, I had a lot of worry about fitting in and how I would do so. A few months in I became established in school and started getting better grades. I then started playing soccer. I began learning new concepts in school and skills in soccer successfully, which gave me the confidence to keep trying. As a result, I continued to learn and get better.

Identity vs Role Confusion

Identity vs Role Confusion occurs during adolescence. During this stage, teens began to discover who they are. It is a rough transition going from being considered a child to being considered more of an adult, and figuring out where you fit in the adult world is equally challenging. One successfully completes this stage by developing their identity and accepting they are uniquely themselves. This includes being true to themselves and learning how to live according to their values and goals. If an adolescent struggles and is unable to find where they fit in and conform to others, they are role confused.

According to the text, this stage is briefly described as "By exploring values and vocational goals, young people form a personal identity. The negative outcome is confusion about future adult roles". In my life, I feel this stage was completed due to my participation in HOSA. I joined my junior year and it really helped me figure out exactly what path I wanted to head down. It challenged me to set new goals and to excel in the area many others were unable to. I was taught things like interviewing skills and public speaking skills that allowed me to get a stable job and head into the next stage.

Intimacy vs Isolation takes place in early adulthood, approximately nineteen to forty. This stage is briefly described by if a person finds love or not. This, however, does not just include romantic relationships but by developing intimate relationships with others like friends outside of a family. A person who is successful in this stage has strong and meaningful relationships. Isolation can occur due to death, divorce, or even fear of commitment or relationship failure.

This stage is described in the text by saying "Young adults establish intimate relationships. Because of earlier disappointments, some individuals cannot form close bonds and remain isolated". While I am still in this stage, therefore there is potential for failure, I feel I am currently successfully completing this stage. I am in a long-term and meaningful relationship. I have a handful of strong and close friendships. I feel as though I have a good support system and am loved by many outside of my childhood family.

Generativity vs Stagnation

This stage begins after entering your forties. I feel this stage is best described by nurturing something that will outlast you. For many people, that may include their children. For others, it may mean building an impactful career or finding another way to contribute to future generations. By building those relationships with family, coworkers, or community members, people in this stage can help leave an impact on the future.

This stage is described by the book, saying "Generativity means giving to the next generation through child-rearing, caring for others, or productive work. The person who fails in these ways feels an absence of meaningful accomplishment". I feel that my biggest successful route to complete this stage in the future is to continue raising my child in a positive manner. By helping her to become a good person, I hope she will have an impact beyond me, and bigger than I could ever imagine.

The final of Erikson's stages occurs in late adulthood, usually after sixty-five. This stage focuses on the person being able to reflect and feel as though they lived a meaningful life. While meaningful has a different definition for each person, to successfully complete this stage, a person should feel acceptance with their choices in life.

The text says " Integrity results from feeling that life was worth living as it happened. Older people who are dissatisfied with their lives fear death". I think that completing this stage will rely on me feeling I lived a successful and meaningful life and being able to reflect on a life well lived.
