Three things I learned about commas. First, what an appositive is, a noun phrase that redefines or clarifies its antecedent (something that comes before). Second, what a tag question is. Is making an assertion and looking for confirmation; it follows this positive and negative flow. (example: You like chocolate, don't you?) Third, commas in dialogue essentially function as runaways. ( example: Rebeca said, " I'm glad that class is over."

The Monkey Bar Story

It was the school year 2008, and I was a first grader in Mrs. Novak's class. It was an afternoon, and the teacher was finishing a math lesson for the day. It was just another typical day at school, not until it became one of the most awful days in my life. I was sitting in class waiting like a soldier, ready to be given orders from my teacher. "Okay, class," my teacher said, "is free time! For our free time will have recess!" in a very harmonious way. I was so happy that my face lit up like a Christmas tree. My classmates and I turned the room into a jungle of monkeys jumping and yelling in so much excitement. We formed a line in front of the door. I can see kids being impatient, rattling their knees, eyes looking directly at the door as if they were trying to open it with their minds, kids making silly faces across the line, and some standing still and quiet. As we exit the classroom, I see the rough white hallway walls and the brown doors with glowing windows. I see the other classroom line behind me. They are very excited too. We all make our way out outside. First, I feel the warm sunlight hitting my skin and a still wind brushing my hair in the air. I see the fading yellow grass hill. Standing on top, I run down the hill with no rush. I get to the bottom and land on the appalling black concrete with vanishing yellow lines. I make my way to the pitch dark blue playground with sturdy brown floors and stairs and a sand color slide. I saw my classmates go for the swings sets and half stayed on the black concrete with the teachers. It felt like I was in an abandoned house, alone without the scary parts. I wasn't inquisitive about why all the kids weren't playing in the playground. I didn't seem to care. Felt a little odd being the only one, but the feeling was brushed right off. I went to the monkey bars. I hold the first two bars swinging myself back and forth and moving my arms from bar to bar to the other side. All of a sudden, a lightbulb is above my head. The idea was to jump off the nearby stairs and grab the nearest bar. I go up the first stair. I get taller than the monkey bars I feel like a tall building. I can see the top of the monkey bars. The bars look like a rope ladder that is floating still. I thought to myself. Should I jump, yes or no? Whithout thinking ,I stood up, and then I took a big leap with my arms extended forward like superman flying in the sky at full speed. My hands grabbed the bar. I was like a trapeze swinging in the air. I let go and land like a gymnast with my arms up. I brought attention to a girl nearby, and she quickly did the same thing. I was so thrilled because I wasn't the only one who could do it. Then a bold idea strikes in my head, a wild one. I decide to jump off the second step of the stairs. I tell the girl my idea, and she nods her head. Yes, as yeah, you can go ahead. I went for it. I went to the second step. I turned around, and I felt like the biggest skyscraper. The girl looked like a tiny human. "Okay, here I go!" I shouted out. My feet left the ground. I look straight ahead. My hand is so close to the bar. In the blink of an eye, I'm staring at the brown and warm yellow mulch on the ground. My flat body facing down with my arms above my head was plunged into the ground, slamming the floor so hard my arms felt so numb. "Are you okay?" I heard from a distance. I lift my head, and the girl stands and stares concernedly. I stood up slowly and pat down all the mulch off my clothes and arms. I said timidly, "Yeah, I'm okay," With a forceful smile. It happened so fast that I didn't think of the pain. I went up the monkey bars again when my hands were about to grab the bar. A full sting of pain shot straight to my left hand. "No, I'm not okay!" I shouted while lifting my left hand up with my right arm under. I turn around and see the smiling teachers looking down at the students around them. They seemed so far, like looking out in the desert. I started to walk and felt so frail. My tears rolled down my cheek while breathing in and out. I stand in front of my teacher with my right arm pointing with my finger, and in the air, I make a circle above my left lower arm, making a gesture where it is hurting. The other teacher was observing my arm like a scientist and said, "Oh, look, she has a bump on her arm ." I didn't freak out, instead. I just looked at it and cried. I was sent to the nurse's office with one of my classmates. When we entered the school, we walked this long-starry hallway to the main building where the office is located. I enter a white eggshell color room with two pine color beds that sit across from each other and white cabinets in the corner. I lay down on one of the beds. The nurse started to wrap my arm like a mummy while she started to make an arm sling. Next thing I'm at the hospital, taken quickly into the emergency room and got an x-ray taken. After being put on medication, the pain was washed away. The doctor comes in and shows my mom the x-ray pictures and explains to her that I have fractured my arm. My mom held up the x-ray picture for me, and I saw that my bone was cracked halfway. I couldn't believe jumping off that high could cause that to my arm. My arm could have split in half. With my crazy ideas at this moment, I wonder if anybody had a crazier idea when they were a child? Did they injure themselves like me, or is it a different story?

First Puppy

"Today is the day," I said quietly under my breath. I was waking up from my bed on a summer day in the afternoon. I go directly to the door and zoom out to the living room. I see my little siblings watching TV when I get to the living room. My sister Ruth who is a year older than me, walks toward me and stands in front of me, and says to me, " Becky and Ruben left a long time ago," she seems delighted, "and they just got there and are picking which puppy they are gonna adopt!" My eyes were wide open, my mind filled with joy. I was a firework bursting in the air of just excitement of knowing that I was going to meet our soon-to-be puppy. After 1 hour went by with no update. My siblings and I were getting so impatient that we were like seagulls yapping at my mom's whereabouts of my older sister and brother. About 10 minutes go by, and my mom receives a phone call and picks it up while standing in the kitchen leaning on the sink while my siblings are in the living room. Then, my mom walks across the living room and comments, "They got stuck in the middle of the road." We all looked at each other, puzzled, as we saw her leave in the front yard. We all followed her like her ducklings waddling fast behind her. We see our mom and dad talking. They immediately set off with the van. Then hours later, being bored of our minds. We hear two cars pull into the driveway and car doors shut in the distance. We storm out of the house like elephants. I saw my parents and older sibling standing in the green grass. As my eyes direct the ground, I see this small tawny dark brown puppy wagging its tail. I kneel slowly and reach both hands to pet it. My older sister Becky says, " She is a girl and a mixed boxer." I look up at her,
"What's her name?" I say.
" I don't know. We all need to decide a name," my sister responds. Then, my older brother Ruben carries her to the backyard, and the rest of us surround him like a huddle of penguins to the yard. Our yard is big and feels like a football field shape of a trapezoid with trees in every corner of the fence. The puppy launched out of my brother's arms and ran into the dirt with clumps of green as she sniffed away at her new yard. At the same time, my little sibling followed like following the leader game. "Let's call her Aly," out of the blue, my brother Ruben says. We all went "oooh," as we thought it was the perfect name. Then we all started calling her name out to get her attention, and Aly sat in front of just wagging her tail as she if she was agreeing with her name. I wonder what others go through to get their first pet like my siblings getting stuck in the middle of the road. I wonder what are some risk that people have made?

Walmart Shopping Cart

The apartments I grew up in, mostly my childhood, were the best and most humble times of my life. It was the most times I had bloody knee scrapes . From all the homes I grew up from a trailer to a blessed house. One of the most memorable homes would be the apartment complex with dirty white brick walls and black metal stairs with concrete steps that zig-zag up the two top floors. When I hear the word Kendall, Lakewood, or Edgewater, I think about the apartment, and all the memories go through my mind like a film. My favorite memories while living there would be my adventures outside. It consisted of 4 buildings, two on the left and two on the right. On the left side is where I lived, and there was a big uneven rectangle of a dirt field with a big downhill and two trees in the middle Of the two buildings. The hill was the most fun to play on , all kids would go on their bikes, scooters or anything that had wheels. It would shot us so far and fast. The most memorable memory on that hill was when I rode a Walmart shopping cart on it. It was a summer day, and a lot of kids went outside and played. There was always something new to do or discover nearby. This time was a shopping cart from Walmart. I asked my mom for permission to go outside, and as she granted me yes, I dashed out like a cheetah. As I step outside, I see kids everywhere. It feels like recess at school. I look at the hill and see four kids speeding down the mountain. Their faces lit up with mouths wide open while the wind stroked their hair back. It looked so extreme that I wonder what else you can go down the hill. I see the kids pushing the car up the big tall hill, and I run over there,
"do want to get on!" a kid shouts,
"Yes!" I shout back.
I struggle a bit, climbing on the gray cart with powder dirt. I sit in the very front of the cart. My hand held the top of the cart to hold on. Then we started moving forward, I looked behind me, and I saw the kid pushing the cart with all his might, his hand stretched out, and his head was looking down. I saw him let go, and the next thing I was going down the hill. So lighting fast, it felt like a roller coaster with the wind hitting my face and my hair waving like a flag in the air. I felt like Jack in front of the Titanic for a moment, yelling I'm the king of the world. I arrived at the bottom. I get out and proceeded to push the cart up the hill to go again. I went on so many times that I couldn’t keep count. Seeing the sun go to sleep it was it was time to go inside and eat. Back then we would do anything to have fun. I wonder what kids do to have fun today?

I didn't know much about activating schema before this week but starting with some that I remember, it wasn't like this week ( 4th week). I have gained so much knowledge on how to activate them. The Ted talk that I chose was "The Power of Introverts" by Susan Cain. I used the web of connections technique to activate my schema, which worked well because I started to build connections and questioning. I began to connect with the title itself. As an introvert, I connected to the word introvert, but the word power didn't seem to shine enough. So, the next thing I did was do my research about the author because I wondered why a person thinks that introverts would have power. I learned that she's a lawyer and an introvert herself. She published a book called Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, and I wonder if it is the same thing she talked about in her Ted talk because both titles are similar.

https://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts? utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare

Susan Cain informs how introverts are looked in the eye-of schools and workplaces and how they belittle them for being in their own space of quietness and that people should recognize them more and look up to them. She states what introversion is and how to put ourselves in a comfortable stimulation that is right for us. She finishes by saying that group work should end, and we need to know how to work on our own, sometimes detach ourselves from reality and get into our minds and share with people who we are and what we got.

The only person I talked to was my sister, who always claimed I was an introvert. I start by saying that it is okay for me to be an introvert. I tell her I listen to a Ted talk about the power of introverts. I say that Susan Cain explains introversion and tell her I'm always comfortable being alone and not going out as much because I'm okay with it. I struggled to explain Cain's main points of why it is okay to work on our own instead in a team and that we should let introverts be introverts. As I ended, my sister complimented me on how well I did and how fascinating it was to learn more about how I feel as an introvert.
