I disagree with this statement as freedom of press is a fundamental principle of democracy. Media freedom includes forms of new media which are not to be censored or restricted and free from political and judicial interference's. This means that media owners have the right to choose what they publish regardless of any conflicting political beliefs.By publicising their opinions and views this enables the public to make informed decisions ,hold leaders accountable and hear a variety of opinions,free from governmental influence.This is important as voter apathy amongst younger people has been increasing due to lack of interest in political participation,the main reason being uneducated in politics so people are less knowledgeable on politics and which decisions would be better for them.With the aid of newspapers from both left wing and right wing such as The Observer and The Saily Mail, voters are able to feel more confident in the political system and during election times which further encourages political participation in the UK with a more meaningful say in how the country is run, and therefore proving democrcy.

I disagree with this statement because firstly newspapers are given the right of freedom of press, which refers to the principle that the media is obliged to operate independently and without interference from the government. Haven given this access, it helps inform citizens about important issues that affect their lives . As of living in a democratic country, the government heavily depend on people’s opinions and say , without newspapers personal opinions on political parties ,it would limit the availability of diverse viewpoints and lead to a less informed electorate. Moreover, numerous numbers have shown that younger people don’t have a comprehensive understanding of how the government runs , without newspapers opinions young people will not be able to truly understand how the government acts and participate effectively in democratic processes. During elections it is important people with the right to vote make their decisions wisely mainly due to the fact newspapers play a big role in reaching people’s interests with particular political parties. I disagree with the statement as i think its important to allow the press have their freedom. If people are getting influenced by newspapers during a political election then its the candidates role to influence them even more during an election to gain their votes. Newspapers shouldn't be the reason or fault to a candidates loss. If newspapers get banned then it goes against the idea of freedom of press which is part of the British values of democracy

I disagree as newspapers have a crucial role in providing information to the public, banning them from supporting political parties would most possibly limit their chance to express their viewpoints which could lead to the public not engaging in media as usual, if members of the public have multiple different opinions of different political parties then they will likely engage in political matters which would make the country seem more democratic. For some, newspapers are the only source of factual information about upcoming elections and possible manifestos that the party is promising if newspapers were banned from stating any political viewpoints then there would be less individuals engaging leading to voter apathy. Another reason is that online media is guilty of spreading false information and many extremist view points are expressed online as they might not be able to express themselves in newspapers and often express themselves online which could lead to a large supporting group of unfair proposals/rules.

I agree with this statement because whilst some may argue that it promotes the "fundamental principle of democracy" and "freedom of expression" it could also in turn be harming the British value of "Tolerance". Through newspapers, misinformation, false news and especially bias can easily be maliciously spread and published (by their owners whom are individuals of power) causing certain political parties to gain an unfair advantage during elections, prejudice against certain groups growing, enabling some extreme party groups to gain support, also readers being easily persuaded to vote for a specific party (which may not be representative of their ideologies) commonly as they may lack knowledge in the country's political system due to high rates of political apathy - 55% (2011). Furthermore, in 1997, "The Sun" had supported labour which resulted an influence on the readers causing labour's landslide victory in that election however in 2010, it had switched its support back to the Conservatives, resulting in the Conservative Party's advantaged victory, ending its support for labour. This shows how much influence newspapers have on elections, making it result in disproportionate victories as well as creating a not so informative advice/information about upcoming elections. Additionally, newspapers have recently declined in popularity, with new forms of media such as televised news, which display unbiased support for political parties, becoming popular. We can gain accessible and unbiased information about political parties where there will be a maintained balanced argument and proportionate treatment/support for parties as one other core principles of Britain is "Equality". Therefore, newspapers should be banned from supporting political parties during an election and would perhaps be better if newspaper were not owned by individuals of power whom provide insights from different perspectives and parties in order to be more representative and useful during elections for the general public.

I agree with this statement as some newspapers have a lot of influence over people for example The Sun had a major influence over many people by publishing newspapers about the Conservatives and then when they won the Sun headlined it 'Its the sun wot won it' in the 1992 general election implying that they had won the people over and swayed people to vote for the Conservatives.

I agree with this statement as it is known for the media to often be corrupt and manipulated into fitting articles and reports based on what their audience would want to hear.
