Here slum houses are made from low quality wood, tin, bamboo, scrap metal, really weak metal, sheets of plastic, etc. This area has a dirty water supply. This might be caused because of the pollution caused by the city. This contaminated water harms the people living in the area in large amounts as they use this water in all means. As we can see, the houses are floating on water. This is not permanent and the houses could sink completely in water any time. Also, the house is floating on plastic and trash. This might lead to and outbreak of infections and diseases. As this squatter settlement is made on water, it could wash away during natural calamities. People living in this squatter settlement dispose all their human waste in the river which itself is their only source of water. Because these people are poor, they cannot afford to pay for their kids’ education fees. People living in this area do not have access to proper health care, food supplies, sanitation facilities, political and social inclusion, transport, etc. Overall, living in these places is a very, very hard life due to all these big problems.

Source: Wikimedia Commons

If the pipe is a sewage pipe it can cause water born diseases like diarrhoea, cholera and e-coli. If it is a clean water pipe it might break and cause water shortages in other houses. These houses are not very strong so in heavy rain, it can be washed to metal sheets and plastic. There are giant plastic rubbish bags which can attract rats and fleas. The houses are really close together which can cause a disease to spread to neighbours easily this can increase the number of deaths. It is also bad because when you have to write where you live in jobs you can’t write a shanty house.

This place is very crowded. There are many houses that are cramped and many people share a house. This environment is very dirty. The sewers are open and the houses have bad hygiene. The houses are made out of blankets, plastic and other weak materials. This makes the houses unstable and vulnerable to falling down. Since we have a lot of rain in Jakarta this place in also vulnerable to being flooded. The kids won’t be able to have good jobs because their parents cannot afford to send them to school. The river carries garbage and other materials which causes the risk of waterborne diseases to spread and thus creating a higher death rate. The rate of mortality also won't be high in such places because there isn’t good health care and this can cause easy deaths. The plastic and pollution of Jakarta might cause airborne diseases to break and this can cause a number of deaths. There is also a lot of germs on the plastic and this can cause bad hygiene. Yet, another problem is that there is a high chance there isn’t any toilets in the place and they have to use the river. If there is a toilet, it is certain that it won't be a good one and this can cause the spread of virus too. In conclusion, this place is not pleasant and is not easy to live in. These people have to live very hard lives. Thank you.

Source: Wikimedia

As you can see there are multiple squatter houses in this area. The majority of the houses are built with discarded junk but some of them are more developed and have stone or brick walls, with metal or brick roofs. Living in some of these houses are large families and this can be tricky and cause problems. If the children in their family go to a school it will be hard for them to stay and get the full education they need because their family needs the money (that keeps them in school) to look after everyone living in the house. The schools the children are going to in this area will possibly be bad quality and this means that staying longer is very important. Since lots of families in this area are large they have to be very careful about catching illnesses and their are many ways they can easily catch something nasty. As is shown in the photo, there is a muddy river next to the houses. This is most likely the place where they bath, wash clothes, get water out of, fish or capture food and many more. There are probably many diseases and germs in the river and everything they wear and eat has been soaked in it. Another major crisis that will follow afterwards is not being able to get the proper medical attention that your sickness may need. This could possibly lead to serious illnesses or even death! On the bottom right corner you can see that someone has decided to build a building across the river from the squatter houses, so soon once that building has developed, they might evict the people from their houses and legally they can.

Source: The Jakarta Post

There are many problems for the people living in this squatter settlement, one of them is that their houses are made out of scavenged material, therefore, the houses can collapse very easily. It isn’t built properly with cement and stone bricks making it very fragile. Houses are crammed together and poorly constructed suggesting overcrowded living conditions. They can also be exposed to various kinds of waterborne diseases because they bathe, drink and wash their clothes in a pool filled with diseases and they don’t have enough money for proper and licenced medical care. The kids lives won’t be filled with many great opportunities and schools the education is not that good and it is also really hard for them to pay because they don’t have the money. This will be the downhill of their life, some might not make it into their adult life because of the diseases that can kill them. Not only does the place give out a bad smell, it also can ruin their respiratory system. The government is helping by providing an eco friendly shelter (that is free), money, food and clothes. They are even opening schools, giving better life opportunities to the children.

Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/worldbank/

Photo from sephi bergerson

This is a photo showing a squatter settlement. This place isn’t a nice place to live in. It’s because of its hygiene issues. There is a pipe going through the whole squatter settlement which you don’t know what sort of water is flowing through in it. If it’s polluted, dirty water with human waste in it, the whole place will be flooded with water you don’t want. If it’s clean water, the city will have a water shortage. Another reason is electricity. It’s because the electricity they’re using is illegal and they just cut off the electric lines and use it. That could cause a power shortage in the cities or in a serious case, a fire.

Also, in squatter settlements, a lot of people share one roof. That means, not only it takes a lot of money to keep up the family needs. (food, school, clothes ext.) That means eventually, people have to go find other places to live or get more people to work. That’s why even the kids work in the streets selling homemade things or anything that can be sold. Also, virus can be easily spread because a lot of people share one roof.

Living in a squatter settlement is very dangerous too. If the house is made of something like plastic, it will be easily destroyed by the wind or storms.

This Squatter Settlement is not a place any human should be living at, this is due to the fact that these houses are not only made from junkyard or dump materials, but their foundations are just small & fragile sticks of bamboo. If any strong storm comes around, it could knock several houses into the dirty river that has loads of trash floating around the banks. This river is probably used by the people living there to shower, clean clothes and even dump their waste! These waters could be infested with bacteria or viruses that come form dirty water like E-Coli which causes diarrhea and vomiting etc! The houses also seem like they're built on top of trash hills. With this many risks available, this is no place anyone deserves to live in.

Houses are being crammed together and are poorly built next to rivers, these kinds of rivers are dark coloured which means it can be filled with products such as cans, plastic, cups and more. Building settlements next to rivers can cause floods, this can lead to people being sick from the open sewers that have lots of trash in it, and the smells can attract diseases such as zika and dengue. The houses are close to each other and it causes unsanitary conditions, the diseases can spread to other people since there are lots of people living in the same area.

The people who are infected would have a hard time recovering since there aren’t much access to doctors. Education near squatter settlements are very limited, children learn in local and poor school which affects their life. The houses are layered on top of each other and are unstable which is dangerous because it can cause a collapse and cause injuries or deaths.
Source: en.vietnamplus.vn

There are many hazards in living in a squatter settlement, here are just a few hazards. First, houses would be made of waste wood, cardboard, plastic for the walls and and if found corrugated iron, which is not be sturdy or strong. The houses are unstable and could easily collapse in bad weather. This means that people can get hurt if their house collapsed. Next, the houses are crammed together and poorly constructed suggesting overcrowded living conditions. The houses aren't insulated and might be cold at night. If a fire were to be lit (for warmth), the whole settlement might burn down. Another hazard is earthquakes, Indonesia has many earthquakes resulting in the wreck of many squatter settlements. As the settlements aren't that stable, the earthquake would have no trouble collapsing the house and trapping anyone inside it.

Another big hazard in living in this squatter settlement is the river. The river is filled with trash and pollution. All the waste and litter from the settlement will have been dumped in the river. This might result in the river being cluttered and polluted. Also the river water will be unclean, because the river is the only nearby source of water to use for washing and bathing, as it will surely have soap mixed in into the water and the water will be unsafe to consume. When it rains in the settlement, the river will flood and the settlement will be flooded with dirty, garbage filled, disease infected, soapy water. Floods can also make people sick and ruin the houses, for the houses were made out of lightweight, non durable scraps, and that could have a big impact on the settlement. In the event of lightning, more houses will be ruined and destroyed. Lighting could also be a fire hazard, after a house is struck by lightning it would start a fire and burn down everything everything in its path.

Since everything in a squatter settlement is crammed together, if a disease were to spread, everyone would be infected in a matter of days. All the rubbish lying around leads up to unsanitary living conditions and then suddenly, everyone is sick. Also the river can be connected to a sewage pipe, when waste is dumped into the river, diseases such as zika and dengue spread like wildfire.

The top three most dangerous hazards are how the houses are unstable, how the river can damage houses and cause diseases, and how all the houses are crammed together. Living in squatter settlements have lots of hazards and life threatening risks, but some people can't afford anything better and they just have to put up with all the risks and hazards.

Source: Wikimedia

Many people have problems living in a squatter settlement. This is a photo taken from a squatter settlement in Jakarta. The issue with this squatter settlement is that it is very crammed and there isn’t much space to do anything. It doesn’t look like there is clean facilities or any help from the government since it is illegally built. Their water source may not be as clean if they take water from the river. The houses here can get destroyed very easily because, for example, if there is a very bad storm, or if there is an earthquake the scavenged materials can simply fall and kill people or destroy the houses. If their houses were built with wood or bricks, that may have a better chance of getting through storms. If they cannot afford food they may have to fish in this river. But since the river isn’t clean and is very polluted with trash, the fish may be poisoned and if they eat it they may get extremely ill. When they need medical care for this problem, they may not be able to afford it. The people living here may not get access to good education or good jobs.

source
