Malala became known worldwide after being shot in the head by the Taliban as she left school in October 2012, when she was 15 years old. Her crime was to speak out against the ban on studies for women in her country. The young woman was born and raised in Mingora, the largest city in the Swat Valley, a very conservative region of Pakistan. In 2008, the Taliban leader, who dominated the place, demanded that schools stop classes given to girls for a month. At that time, a BBC journalist asked Malala's father, who owned the school where she studied, if some young people would be willing to talk about it. That's when the girl created the blog “Diary of a Pakistani Student” to write about her love for studies and the difficulties experienced in Pakistan. The blog was written under a pseudonym, but within a few months Malala's identity was revealed and she began to give interviews to TV and newspapers. The attack on the activist came shortly after the Taliban had lost control of the Swat Valley and the justification was that she was a threat against Islam. The girl needed surgery and was transferred to the UK, where she received treatment and recovered.
In 2014, as a result of her commitment to guaranteeing women's right to education, Malala became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize, at age 17. She currently lives with her family in England, but still has the desire to return to her country to enter politics.
