         <description><![CDATA[<div>Overall, I liked the book. It was well written and had a good story line. One thing I didn't like about it was that it was kind of below a typical 8th grade reading level; it felt distinctly child-like. However, I liked how real it felt and how the author described the good days and the bad days. It was an emotional read that got me thinking about what it would be like to be in Melody's shoes. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The author wrote a lot like a kid would think. She did a very good job of putting everything into Melody's perspective, not only as a disabled person but as an eleven year old girl. The author really shows how Melody reacts and what emotions she's feeling.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of the first important events that happen is Melody gets a puppy and she names it Butterscotch; Butterscotch becomes Melody's companion (67). A few years after that, she gets a new baby sister, Penny. Penny is perfect and can do everything which sometimes makes Melody jealous. (76) In fifth grade, Melody starts to be included in some of the "normal classes". (94) In there, she befriends a girl named Rose. Next, she gets her own personal aide, Catherine, to help her with everyday things like eating, going to the bathroom. (104). Catherine and Melody look into getting a computer that can talk for Melody, and a few weeks later she gets a Medi-Talker, which allows her to communicate with everyone with an actual voice. Melody does a practice test for the Whiz kids quiz team and she aces it. (149). After that, she studies really hard and she takes the test to get onto the Whiz kids team and she once again gets a better score then everyone else.(181). The team studies and they go to there first competition round, which they end up winning by just a few points.(208). This qualifies them to go to Washington D.C. After a lot of planning and preparation, Melody and her family get to the airport, only to be told that their flight had been canceled and Melody's team had left without her on a different, earlier flight. (255). After a few emotional days, she decides to go back to school. The morning of school, her mom runs Penny over with the car. (276). The book ends with Penny recovering and Melody confronting the students of her quiz team about what happened. (289).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think the main theme in the book is that even if there is something wrong, you always try your hardest and you always persevere no matter what the circumstances are. Another way to look at it is to never underestimate someone with disabilities because even if they look different on the outside they are still human beings.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Melody changes a lot in the book because at the beginning she has a lot of things to say and she can't, but towards the middle of the book she gets the machine that talks for her (132). I think for her that is really big because she can actually say what she's thinking and she doesn't have so many pent up emotions and words. Also, as the book progresses she gets more sure of herself and confident that she's enough even if she is different from the other kids. (179)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Melody is a eleven year old girl with cerebral palsy which means that she can't walk, talk or control her movements. The book is about how she tries to over come her disabilities, despite having bigger problems then most young kids. The most important eventnn in the book, in my opinion, is when Melody gets a Medi-Talker. (132). This allows her to have a voice, even if it is just a machine doing the talking. The Medi-Talker opens up new opportunities for her, such as trying out for the Whiz Kids quiz team, where she encounters more problems that she must face.(181).</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of the moments that painted a picture in my mind was when Melody described watching her mom yell at her third grade teacher. The teacher had been teaching them the A, B, C's and all the kids were freaking out because they were so frustrated that the teacher thought they were that stupid. Melody's mom came in and chastised the teacher and it made Melody happy because her mom was giving words to how Melody felt. (57, 58, 59)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I infer that if Melody gets very annoyed when adults or other peers think she's stupid when really she's smarter than any of them. I also infer that even though she has her Medi-Talker, it still isn't the same as actual conversation because she has to take time to type something out and I think that Melody gets frustrated easily when she has to talk in a large group. (193, 194)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I had a text-to-self connection while Melody was explaining how frustrated she was when the teachers taught something way below her understanding. Sometimes, when I was younger I felt that something we were learning was way to easy, and I didn't know how to express that very well to my teachers. I remember feeling very frustrated, so I could empathize with her, although not to the same level as her because she could not even talk. (55)</div>]]></description>
