I think that the article is right that the painting got a lot more attention because of the drama surrounding it, but I also believe that the Mona Lisa would still be famous without all of the excitement and the hyperbole by Pater simply because it is one of Leonardo DaVinci's pieces, and he is one of the most prominent Renaissance artists.

The Mona Lisa is a painting that has planted itself throughout culture from the nineteenth century up until today. While it does have a lot of intrigue about its origin, creation, technique, and style, the Mona Lisa has been described by many as "nothing special." Yet, it has buried itself within society, used as a pattern by Andy Warhol, even a third grade art project at East Elementary. This article highlights a lot of the hype surrounding the Mona Lisa, and its popularity through the mass media publicizing the hyperbolic descriptions of it as well as following the infamous theft of the piece. This hype has cycled across generations, with grandparents, parents, and children all familiarizing themselves with the most "famous painting ever created" and having an urge to see it, in all its "dullness."

I didn't know how much the painting had been through. It seems like the hype is largely due to the interesting timeline of ownership of the painting. However, the painting is beautiful and it was created by Da Vinci, whose works would still be well known and held in high regard even if he had not gained fame from the Mona Lisa. The painting is more famous due to its history, but not solely because of it.

I believe that the Mona Lisa became famous due to events outside the control of Leonardo Da Vinci. It became a mainstream painting when it was praised by a critic in the late 1800's. It was stolen and recovered in the early 1900's which again put it headlines. I feel that it became famous because of the newspaper rather than its actual quality. Because of this, I feel that it is overrated.

While I would agree that the painting superficially isn't as great as it is often given credit for being, the meaning and history behind it is truly profound. I think that there are many better paintings of the era - if I was given a single renaissance painting of my choice, it would be something more creative, with more detail and beauty than the Mona Lisa like Adoration of the Magi or the Creation of Adam.
