While it does have a lot of intrigue about its origin, creation, technique, and style, the Mona Lisa has been described by many as "nothing special." Yet, it has buried itself within society, used as a pattern by Andy Warhol, even a third grade art project at East Elementary. This article highlights a lot of the hype surrounding the Mona Lisa, and its popularity through the mass media publicizing the hyperbolic descriptions of it as well as following the infamous theft of the piece. It seems like the hype is largely due to the interesting timeline of ownership of the painting. However, the painting is beautiful and it was created by Da Vinci, whose works would still be well known and held in high regard even if he had not gained fame from the Mona Lisa. It became a mainstream painting when it was praised by a critic in the late 1800's. It was stolen and recovered in the early 1900's which again put it headlines. I feel that it became famous because of the newspaper rather than its actual quality.
