Flocking benefits birds in many ways such as increasing their predatory rates (being able to find food), having a greater means of defense against predators, and an increase in vigilant behavior, which will be discussed in the next post. However, there are also several risks to group behavior such as an increased amount of competition within the group, individual organisms being more susceptible to disease, and large groups easily being able to be spotted by predators.

Vigilant behavior in birds is important because it allows the birds to know when they could be in potential danger. This, and the other positive characteristics of birds have become adaptations over time because of their benefits of increased survival chance.

I personally believe that group behavior is one of the most important factors an organism (that practices group behavior) needs for survival. Group behavior, although it has some risks, allows organisms of the same species to cooperate in order to achieve a greater chance of survival.
