In the 1950's the clothing was conservative and more classic than the 60's. The 1960's had whimsical patterns, bright colors, and long hair. Women in the mid-60's wore tighter waists like London, and in the late 1960's flare-bottom pants were popular and really short-shorts were common. Men in the early 60's wore pretty much the same thing as they did in the 1950's like the women's clothing did, but later on they started to wear tighter fitting pants and they grew out their hair,

S. E. Hinton's book, The Outsiders, has many similarities and differences from the time period in which it was made. One example is the cars. Mustangs, Corvairs, and Stingrays were popular cars in the 60's and 70's. Bob, a soc, drives a Mustang, and several other socs drive popular cars like Corvairs and Stingrays. Paul Newman was a popular actor during the time of The Outsiders. Ponyboy Curtis liked watching Paul Newman movies. Drive-in movies were also popluar in both the 1960's and The Outsiders. Ponyboy, Two-Bit, and Johnny went to a drive-in movie where they met Cherry and Marcia.

When S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders, she left out many aspects of the 1960's. She didn't mention the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. They were important people in American society. When they were killed it was a big shock to everyone. Also, space travel was some of the most popular news at the time. The Russians started the space exploration race by sending

Yuri Gagarin into space. Then in 1962, John Glenn became the first man to orbit Earth. And finally in 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. But space exploration was not the only thing on people's mind. The Vietnam War was raging, and many didn't believe it was a war worth fighting. The Outsiders didn't mention any of these aspects of life in the 1960's.

History in The Outsiders

S. E. Hinton added a lot of history into The Outsiders like conflicts and characters. She used the main conflict of her high school years in the 1960's to create The Outsiders. The Greaser versus Soc conflict of the 1960's was shown greatly through her book. The main characters, Ponyboy, Darry, Sodapop, Two-Bit, Dally, Steve, and Johnny are greasers. They have fights and arguments with socs like Bob and Randy. S. E. Hinton makes the theme of the book, everyone is the same, because in her high school she wasn't a greaser or a soc, and she realized they were all the same. She also incorporates the popular actor, Paul Newman, so people reading her book could relate to Ponyboy's love for the movies. Dally being from the rough streets of New York allowed her to add in how tough life was for some people; abusive parents, always being on guard, and murders or jumpings. She mentions cars a lot because they were the big status symbol of the 1960's. Socs like Bob and Randy had Mustangs, Corvairs, and Stingrays showing they had a lot of money that their parents just allowed them to spend. Integrating history into The Outsiders made it more realistic and tangible to the readers.
