He was 11 years old, and Holden was 13 years old. Holden, devastated over the death of his brother, broke his hand shattering the windows out of the garage of their summer home. The psychoanalytic lens means that we can understand Holdens unconscious desires and anxieties through text. When Allie died Holden broke every single glass window in his garage except for one on the car. He associated the car with memories of the two of them. He desired to never forget him, and he felt that the best way to do that was by not breaking the car window. He fears the death of his brother will make him lonely, because they were so close. This trauma made him develop anxiety about the idea of death. He will never act the same as he did before the loss of his brother, because of the trauma, depression, and anxiety  that came from it. Holden is grieving his brother, and It doesn't matter how close they were. He has the right to feel, and grieve however he wants to. They were a family, and now that's gone. Although Phoebe is around, he’s still going to feel lonely. There could have been things that he could do with Allie that he doesn't want to  do with his little sister. Allies death is unfortunately going to leave him feeling traumatized, and lonely for the foreseeable future. A dark empty room represents Holden's trauma, anxiety, and loneliness. The darkness symbolizes the trauma, because people associate fear with it; moreover, trauma is typically the cause of people’s anxieties. The emptiness of the room followed by the single chair represents his loneliness now that his brother is gone. With that loneliness comes more fear anxiety, and even depression. The single chair can also represent his loneliness because now it's only him, and with Allie gone there is no need for a second chair.

He wandered around New York City to avoid having to face his parents, and explain why he is home early. This action of his allows us to understand that he likes to run away from his problems. He chose to not apply himself in school from the start; consequently, resulting in him being expelled. He was doomed from the beginning, because of the bad stigma he holds against schools. This wasn't his first rodeo; moreover, he’s not new to failing out of a school. The interesting thing this time was that he wasn’t that affected by it. He didn't show any sorrow, or regret for his expulsion. If anything he was relieved and happy. As soon as he left he yelled “Sleep tight, ya morons!” showing he couldn't care less about the school, or the people in it. Holden can be characterized as a cowardly lazy person. He is a lazy person, because he’s not doing good in school. He is a coward, because he is not trying to do good. Instead, he just runs away. His lazy cowardly decisions consequently resulted in him getting expelled. I chose a sleeping Lion to represent Holden as a lazy coward. A lion is considered to represent a coward, because of the famous story The Wizard of Oz. The lion is too afraid to do anything, but with the help of Dorothy, he overcomes his fears. Similar to Holden being too afraid to apply himself, when all he needed was a little help and self-motivation. The lion also is a visual representation of laziness, because it is sleeping instead of hunting or mating. Anticipating her arrival Holden contemplates whether or not he will be able to go through with it. He takes into consideration his past sexual history, and he realizes  they’ve all failed. When she comes he backs out, and is unable to have sex with her. He gets frustrated with himself, and blames Sunny, the prostitute for depressing him. Holden revealed that he can’t separate the feelings of love from sex. He couldn’t have sex with Sunny, because he didn’t know enough about her. He respects a woman too much to use them. He desires to have sex, but not with just anybody. He wants to do it with someone he knows everything about. Someone he can connect with on a deeper level, not just a sexual level.  He wishes to be like other boys who can sleep around; however, that is not him. This makes him feel isolated from others, and lonely. He asked Sunny to talk with him, instead of having sex with him. It’s not what someone would expect a prostitute and a 16-year-old boy to do. Holden is honorable, because he doesn't just jump into bed with every girl he meets. He doesn't think it's right to get into a girls pants before you get to know her. He respects, admires, and appreciates girls, and in return, he is honorable for it. I chose a trophy to represent Holden. Typically when you’re rewarded with a trophy it means you've done something honorable. I believe Holden is honorable by not sleeping with girls before getting to know them. He visits the Museum of Natural History even though he knows that  she wouldn't be on a field trip there with her class. He says he knows the museum like a book, because he used to go there all the time. Holden goes to the museum despite there being any reason, because he desires normality. To him, life is moving too fast, and he misses his childhood. He enjoys the museum, because nothing ever moves; moreover. he can count on it to keep routine. The museum comforts him, because he knows the memories he has of them will never change. He likes returning to things that remind him of his childhood, because he prefers life that way. Holden is unstable, and he feels like he can’t truly be comfortable where he is. This could be the reason why he wanted to leave school, and come back home early. He just misses the security that only home, and family can give. I chose this Jenga tower to represent Holden, and his life. Just like Holden, this tower is unstable. The pieces are out of place, and it looks like it's going to fall. He looks for Phoebe in her room, but she is in D.B’s room. He finds Phoebe snuggled tight in D.B’s bed. He doesn't want to wake her, but he does. The two catch up a ton, but once she realizes that he’s home early she gets mad. She repeats “daddy’s gonna kill you”, but Holden isn't too worried. He tries to justify his situation, but Phoebe wouldn't listen. She eventually responds by saying he hates everything. When he can’t think of anything he likes his mind wanders off, and he has no real answer.  When his parents get home. He doesn't leave empty handed, because Phoebe gave him her Christmas dough. Which reveals that Holden is childish. Holden believes that adulthood can only be bad, and he wants to stay an innocent child forever. Phoebe has to snap him out of this idea. Even though she is 6 years younger than him she realizes that everyone has to grow up. Which is a problem he struggles with. Holden has a serious fear of growing up, and changing. Which makes him childish. It also shows that he is dependent on Phoebe. Not only is he surviving off her money, but he went to her for a reason. Whether it was subconsciously, or not he wanted to hear the advice she had to give. I chose a stuffed animal to represent Holden. A stuffed animal is often tied to childhood. The bear is a symbol of childhood,  because most kids have an emotional attachment to toys like this. A stuffed animal cannot be a stuffed animal without the stuffing, similarly, he cannot be himself without Phoebe. That is where dependence comes in. Holden didn't want to spend Phoebe's Christmas dough on a hotel, so he figured he’d ask a trusted adult. Mr. Antolini said yes, and welcomed him in. Mr. Antolini gave Holden some unwanted advice to apply himself to his studies. After the two talked for a while Holden went to bed. Coincidentally Holden was not offered pajamas, so he slept naked. Holden woke up to Mr. Antolini petting his head. Holden storms out while Mr. Antolinni tries to manipulate him to stay. Holden left, but promised to come back. He knew full well that he had no intentions of returning. Holden feels violated because of Mr. Antolini. He also feels betrayed, because he was always a person he respected. After the incident with James castle, Holden thought Mr. Antolnii was a hero. This could be the cause of a new anxiety for him. He is going to feel like he can’t trust anyone, and he is going to believe that everything isn't as it seems. He desires for life to stay still and calm; however, after experiencing that he will believe it’s impossible. His view on adulthood being a cruel place isn't likely to change. Holden is too trusting of others. None of this would have happened if holden didn’t trust Mr. Antolini enough to stay the night at his house. He also shouldn’t have been trusting enough of that environment to sleep naked. Ultimately, it’s not his fault, but if he was a little more skeptical, bad things like that wouldn't happen to him. I chose this rope that’s being held together by a string to represent Holden. Holden puts too much trust into people like Mr. Antolini. Since he trusted Mr. Antolini too much he was betrayed.
