The Hermit is stealthy, independent, and smart. He steals from camps for food. If he doesn't eat he will become weak and won't be able to survive in the woods. This s written in 3rd-person so we see the Hermits motives of stealing and being quiet so he doesn't wake anyone. When he finds the jackpot of food in the kitchen he gets really excited when he knows he doesn't have to starve.

The Hermit got caught stealing and the camp owner called authorities. The cop said he had the right to remain silent but the Hermit states his name. Maybe the Hermit wanted to stop living like that. He states other important details to his character that identifies who he is. The Hermit had been on the run for decades and the cops have been trying to find him for decades. Now they caught him and know who he is. Christopher Knight's (The Hermit) answers were short and sweet.

Knight explains his crimes. He was talking to the deputy and confessing everything he has done. Knight says "Somewhere in the woods a distance away". Meaning that Knight lived in the woods for decades. The deputy asked how he got money. Knight says he has "only gathered around $345 over the decades". And that's not a lot of money to get so the Hermit has been poor.

Mood

Knight expressed that he doesn't like jail. He wouldn't even talk to the interviewer when he first came in because he was so closed off. He is finding it hard to adjust from him saying "You asked how I sleep. Little and uneasy. I am nearly always tried or nervous". So Knight is uncomfortable and sad in jail. We know this because now he's counting the jail days by growing out his beard. And that's a slow process that is miserable when you're relying on it everyday.

Characterization

Knight explains to one of the generals his campsite and how he lived there for decades. He expressed he way Knight walks is very light. "This guy would never step anywhere that would leave a track. He wouldn't break a twig, flatten a fern, or kick a mushroom. He avoided all snow. I was beside myself-...". The general can't believe how quick and light Knight can move and that is why nobody had ever caught him. It's because nobody could every trace him because he was too stealthy.

Knights past was tough. It could be why he ran away at such a young age to live by himself. He would have barely anyone to talk to. He always had to work hard with no excuses and money was tight. Because money was tight and he always had to be giving he could have thought that is was his turn to finally have money, and he thought stealing was the best idea.
