Once the group has a list of potential solutions, each one needs to be evaluated. Positives and negatives of each solution needs to be considered. The tasks involved in implementing the solutions should also be considered. Making a PMI chart (Plus/Minus/Implications) is also useful. Once this is done solutions should be discarded if not feasible.

The one thing I have learned in the past four years of teaching PreK children with autism is that the sa;ying, "It takes a village...." definitely speaks of PreK classes! I can honestly say that I would not be here today without the help and support of many people. Therefore I have chosen to focus on the Steps in Group Problem Solving and their importance.

Research has proven that problem identification is the most critical step in solving. Problems need to be accurately described without emotions and should be stated as a question. This helps to keep the process constructive and encourages group problem solving. The problem should be easily distinguished from the appropriate behavior.Upon completion check to see that all group members agree with the description of the problem.

Solving problems requires divergent thinking The following are techniques that lead to more varying thinking:
Brainstorming- members of the group call out problem solving solutions as they think of them. These are written down for later review. Brainwriting- Members individually write down 3-4 ideas for solutions. Written ideas are used to stimulate even more ideas to be considered. Nominal Group Technique-members put in groups and come up with individual ideas to share, then work to come up with ideas the group agrees on.They are then shared with entire group.

Does this work for you (the teacher)? If not, is there one that is better? Discuss each of the solutions among the group and choose the one that everyone agrees will work.

Now that the solution has been selected and the group has gone through all of the scenarios, it is ready to be implemented. Review the plan again and finalize the steps to be used. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS, be prepared for problems before they occur. Set up how you will assess the plan and BEGIN! After a short time meet again to evaluate the plan and how it's working, make adjustments if needed, and step back and see if it does it;s job! There is nothing like working together and seeing success to bring a group together!
