         <description><![CDATA[<p>In my opinion, teaching gifted students means continually giving them the opportunity to take charge of their learning, and I act as a guide and a support. It's my job to frame lessons and activities to guide this thinking but not to do the thinking/exploring for them. Gifted students love the GRIT of learning and through that grit, they form their own ideas and opinions related to the learning. It's also important to then validate their opinions and let them know they are truly heard. </p>]]></description>

The thoughts and conversations that go on in my classroom not only build a better understanding of each other, but allow us to have a safe environment to foster learning and growth. I can feel and see the empathy and comprehension that is going on in each persons face and in their words as they learn from others and want to make a difference. However, it is important that students have someone who can show them an unbiased representation of the world. In World Lit it is our job to show students about different perspectives in the world. This makes the students more open to new ideas and people that are different than them. In the image, the table is composed of four distinct colors and is being carried by four individuals with the same four colors. What is interesting, is that four individuals are needed to lift the table, and that each individual is lifting a part of a table that does NOT match their own color.  I feel this symbolizes the idea that we recognize and respect our differences, and work together toward a common goal.  We embrace our differences, respect each other, and find ways to work together in a culturally responsible way.</p>]]></description>

Gifted students often ask <em>why</em> things are done a certain way. When we withhold conversations about cultural differences or avoid complex topics, we limit their ability to think critically and creatively. Discussing culture shouldn't be taboo; we have a lot to learn from each other and most often, our culture helps shape who we are. While we do not always have to see eye to eye, it is important to stay open minded and respectful when having conversations, no matter how safe or uncomfortable they may feel. Depending on the topic, I do believe that it is important for educators to stay neutral (ex: I do not believe we should be sharing our political beliefs with children) so that everyone feels comfortable being their true self and sharing there ideas. However, in order for these conversations to be productive, there has to be a judgement free and respectful environment created prior. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>This picture shows a diverse choir working together for one thing - making beautiful music.  The arts are a great place to use your individual gifts and work together for a common end - and this is a great example of how things should be. It may be idealistic, but if we had more of this I believe it would lead to more understanding and less division. When students work with concentrated focus with people who differ from them, they begin to see and appreciate the beauty that each person brings to the whole. </p><p><br/></p><p>Additionally, we try to sing music from different cultures.  The music is challenging, fun, interesting, beautiful, or unique in other ways and - while there is usually some pushback to having to sing in a different language - the students end up appreciating the music and learning a little about the culture of the composer. </p>]]></description>

My students in my CTE classroom are developing not only technical skills, but also communication, leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills they will use with people from many different backgrounds. Gifted students especially need opportunities to explore real-world issues, share their perspectives, and think critically about the world around them. I believe it is important for me to continue to expose my students to diverse career pathways, cultures and leaders so they can become creative thinkers and future leaders who are prepared to make a positive impact in society.</p>]]></description>
