Students who feel that they can express themselves and their unique ideas, perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences in their classrooms are often more willing to work, push, challenge, and grow themselves as students and individuals. If they feel represented in our classrooms, they often feel more accepted and comfortable so then they can live out their full potential.

By inviting each student to bring their whole identity to the classroom, we empower them to build a world that doesn’t just include them but is shaped by them.

Exploring diverse cultural viewpoints encourages empathy, and skills essential for gifted learners and develop the global awareness needed to become thoughtful leaders in an interconnected world.

It is important for teachers to give everyone the opportunity to work together. Students should be able to learn and express themselves in a safe environment.

Kids are most impressionable at a young age. Teaching them to work with all types of other students from different backgrounds early can help set the tone for the rest of their years in school and beyond.

Additionally, we try to sing music from different cultures. The music is challenging, fun, interesting, beautiful, or unique in other ways and - while there is usually some pushback to having to sing in a different language - the students end up appreciating the music and learning a little about the culture of the composer.

This quote reminds me that my students need to be prepared for a diverse and global workforce. Culturally responsive teaching is important because students learn best when they feel represented, valued, and heard in the classroom. My students in my CTE classroom are developing not only technical skills, but also communication, leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills they will use with people from many different backgrounds. Gifted students especially need opportunities to explore real-world issues, share their perspectives, and think critically about the world around them. I believe it is important for me to continue to expose my students to diverse career pathways, cultures and leaders so they can become creative thinkers and future leaders who are prepared to make a positive impact in society.
