This connects to real life because some people will also have to adapt and immigrate. For example, America has troops in Italy, Japan, Honduras, Taiwan, South Korea, Greece and many more. They do this because they have power over that country and the neighboring countries around it. Oil is valuable and they would fight over it or just work with Saudi Arabia and practically control the oil. For Europeans, they came to America for the search of wealth and/or to spread religion. There was an economic depression that came from the Black Death in England and quality of life was steadily dropping. They needed a source of income quickly so they started sending people to America to colonizing the land. This started the system of mercantilism. This is when a country taxes a colonies for all the trading. The people immigrating to the America's was seeking to start a new life, typically in the tobacco fields. They would use slaves as labor in the fields. 

They also spread religion by sending missionaries to the America's. A lot of the times, they would give the Native Americans an ultimatum. They would give them the choice of either converting to Christianity or to be enslaved, so it was not really a choice whatsoever. For Native Americans, they were affected by colonialism because the Europeans were invading and colonizing their land. They needed to fund England so they started using mercantilism. This led to them hunting some of the native animals to the brink of the extinction because they needed to earn money. For example, the buffalo and raccoon. This made the Native Americans have to emigrate away or to stay in fight. Both bad choices.
