https://www.rediff.com/news/report/melania-unveils-last-christmas-decor-in-white-house/20201202.htm

Christmas is a Christian festival for celebrating the birth of Jesus, nowadays it's also the time of year for families to reunion. Families and friends would exchange holiday gifts, and small children would hang stockings in their room so that the morning of Christmas Day they would receive gifts from Santa Claus.

This year, families who decorated the tree placed the name of their fallen family member on ribbon that will adorn the tree, the White House said in a statement.

Separated by region, classical urns hold foliage representative of the official tree of each state and territory. Just beyond the gallery of greenery, the East Garden Room displays holiday cards sent by first families over the past twelve administrations. This year's card, shimmering in gold, shows the unique landscape of America.

Today in this globalized world, as a Chinese I also enjoy the holiday vibes of Christmas because of the fabulous holiday decorations in town and beautiful Christmas trees. It's also a chance for us to give holiday gifts to our friends, which brings out relationships closer.

Great Britain: Stir-up Sunday Since Victorian times in Great Britain, the Sunday five weeks before Christmas has been known as Stir-up Sunday, where revelers make porridge or pudding with 13 ingredients to represent Jesus and his 12 disciples. Everyone in the family "stirs up" the porridge, reciting related passages from the Book of Common Prayer. Each family member makes a silent Christmas wish while stirring from east to west—the direction the Three Wise Men are said to have traveled. From my perspective, this festival is meaningful, because it has a long story since Victorian time in UK. Also, people could have fun with their families from this activity and make a tasty meal.—— Zerek

It was first celebrated in the Native American tribes in what is now USA in 1621. At that time, a British ship called Mayflower arrived at the tribes, not having enough food to survive the winter. The Natives had a feast with them and helped them live through their first winter there. Thanksgiving is now celebrated on the last Thursday of November, and people usually have a big feast together with turkey. I believe that this festival is very meaningful, because it shows respect to the native helpers that kept the British alive. Under today’s context, it is also a very good way to show thanks to other people that have helped us throughout our lives.
— Ray

Thanksgiving is a popular American holiday, which is celebrated once every year. It is primarily associated with the United States, where it occurs on the fourth Thursday in November.
Today, in the United States, Thanksgiving celebration largely centres around eating a large meal, which almost always includes turkey. Other traditional foods eaten on Thanksgiving include pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.
Typically, Americans will spend the day with their family or a group of friends and give thanks for the things they feel fortunate to have in their lives. Many Americans attend a local Thanksgiving Day parade, and these parades are often televised. They celebrate it to giving thanks to God for their blessings.
In my opinion, it is a very good opportunity to stay together with their family and they can use that day to thank the people that they want to gratitude but they don't have time before. ——Billy

I consider it as art, since it is a creation with creativity included, and the artist captured a theme to express his opinions.

When asked why he chose to paint Campbell’s soup cans, Warhol offered a deadpan reply: “I used to have the same lunch every day, for twenty years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.” That daily meal is the subject of this work consisting of thirty-two canvases—one for each of the flavors then sold by Campbell’s—using a combination of projection, tracing, painting, and stamping. Repeating the nearly identical image, the canvases at once stress the uniformity and ubiquity of the product’s packaging and subvert the idea of painting as a medium of invention and originality.

Campbell's soup exists everywhere in people's daily lives, but Warhol is the only one to think of turning this common object into a series of symbolic artworks. Pioneering makes a creation original, and originality makes each art piece an unprecedented innovation.

-Victoria

It depicts a young child who reaches out to a red heart-shaped balloon that is just out of her reach, as her hair and dress are blown by a strong gust of wind. There is also a sentence which is ‘There is always hope’. This graffiti ony contain three kinds of colours. Red balloon likes the symbol of childhood and freedom. It is not only the toy for children but also it means the love and dream. This reflect the the society by using innocence and moral virtue children. For this artwork, it compares the clean childhood and the faults of the society. It also connect different themes wchich is war, political division, and mass-surveillance. The girl streching out her hand means keep to be freedom. This article express the a idea, emotion and the world view. The idea of this artwork is to let citizens feel how quickly ice melts in person in order to raise awareness on global warming. The artist was inspired by the incredible Icelandic landscape when he was a child, and he wished to raise public awareness on the environment. I believe that this is considered art because it successfully delivers the message that the artists wishes his audience to receive. The choice of using ice from the arctic regions is also very creative as it gives people a clear thought of the incredible rate the polar caps are dissapearing at.

"To convey and express ideas, to beautify the surroundings, to communicate" is my understanding towards the term "art". I agree this piece of work found in New York is art from both the skill level and interpretation. First, it beautifies the abandoned corner of the city to improve its value, provide an amazing visual sense. And also, it is a miniature of people's ideas, attitudes and hope, which are positive. This artwork is more like a demonstration under the particular context, what we can actually see and feel through it is more than a visual enjoyment but a strong sense of power and attitude beneath it, which is more catching and attractive than a normal piece of work. Hence it's seen to be art.

This artwork has shown the negative attitude towards his woeful life, which is being a cashier in Krusty Krab for 20 years, his art talents never being explored by other people. Most importantly, being tortured by SpongeBob and Patrick Star. For this sculpture, he actually shows his attitude by bending his tentacles in his sculpture which is based on himself. The ferocious face of the sculpture also represents the hopeless attitude of Squidward. Because this art shows his inward world to people, that’s why I think this is a piece of artwork.
By Bob

I believe that every person have their own definition of art. What cause it? Because it is such a multifaceted concept that it is simply not possible to give a universal definition to it that will completely cover all its aspects. Art is something that can help us to express our own emotions or feelings. Art is understood as any activities or porduct done by people with a communicative or aesthetic purpose—something that expresses an idea, an emotion or, more generally, a world view. It is a component of culture , reflecting economic and social substrates in its design. As what I said, this concept of what art means is very complex and encompasses a great variety of subtypes. It can be realized in all the possible spheres of life, and in every one of them, it can take so many forms that it is impossible to describe them all at once. If I try to generalize, art for me is a kind of thing that warms my heart and makes me think.

Art is a form of expression, to reflect the innermost feelings and inspirations of human. Artworks does not merely include the creativity of the artist, but also revealed his/her true ideas about the object/scene being portrayed. Art can be subjective with themes varied in different context. For instance, Van Gogh portrays a room with strongly contrasting colors and a unique composition; Edward Hooper paints rooms in combination with isolated human figure to create a melancholy feeling. Therefore we can identify the nature of art - a symbol of flexibility.

Primarily, art is what people look forwards. Human is naturally attracted to things that they are interest, which can be good life, ideals and good-looking appearance. What we define is art, is what we pursuit. Moreover, our aesthetic judgment is determined by our background, culture and experiences. Different people from various races or tribes may have different aesthetic standards.

In my opinion, in order to fine our own definition towards art, people need to have an extend of sensitivity. When we judge whether this is art or not, we need to exclude any practical theories, to feel and scrutinize them. It is more helpful when we use our heart to experience then having a mutual consensus to judge “this is art” or “this isn’t art”

—— Samantha Xia

That said, if my children’ health is the same healthy as the majority of the child, or even better, in this case, I won’t alter their genes. This scenarios are more likely to using living things to make unpredictable experiment, which means, the result may unacceptable. If my child is health, gene altering may cause certain diseases which will effect the whole life of child. If being as a disable, it will hard to be accept by society.

B: From my personal perspective. Cloning is a great proof of human ingenuity.

1. I would not change the gene of my child from current perspective. There are two reasons. This first one is that I do not want to face the uncertainties that may be brought by genetic editing. Gene is very complex, meaning that a small change in gene may lead to huge and unpredictable changes of human body. For example, if cutting one gene leading to immune of AIDS but easier to get other diseases, then there is no point having gene editing. These are some concerns on gene editing. Unless gene is proven safe by sufficient sample, I would not alter the gene of my child.
Another reason is simple. I feel weird if my child's gene become less similar after gene edition.

2. This is a great proof of human's limitless ingenuity. The technique of gene editing help human open a new field for future discovery and inventions and there will be more innovations appears. Though there may be ethical concerns in the future, but the ethical standards varies as time pass.

Perspective 1: Benefit the most people?

To think form the perspective of those non-native residents outside of Dakota, such an enormous pipeline would greatly increase the efficiency of oil transportation across the wilderness of Central United States. To benefit the most amount of domestic people, this construction is actually a good idea. We may save much more people from coldness and hunger in winter, and people suffering from illnesses cause by non-proper cooking process, but transporting more energy to small towns and cities, to their homes.

Perspective 2: Minority group?

Imagine a huge pipeline runs through your front door! Are you still able to live freely or unaffected at all? The answer is too obvious. For the natives, a huge pipeline would not just damage the natural environment that they had been relying on for hundreds of years! And you will never know, when, a huge pipeline filled with flammable oil will explode and burn its surroundings to the ground?! The natural scenery, habitat and local's security are all damaged due to the construction of this pipeline. If I am a local I would definitely reject this project and protest!!!

Victoria

From my point of view, I think it is difficult to find a balance between the pros and cons of building the Dakota Pipeline. We have too many different perspectives on this issue. For example, on the environmental side, the construction of a pipeline to transport oil would cause damage to the land and water environment, potentially polluting water resources and possibly offending some religious cultures. At the same time, building a pipeline would replace the use of transport such as trains, which would reduce carbon emissions and be good for the air environment.

Overall, I think it is important to consider the extent of both the benefits and the disadvantages if we are to decide whether this is the right or wrong decision. If the lives of people are greatly affected directly, there is no point in going ahead.

In my opinion, I understand the furiousness from the indigenous people in North Dakota. As they are concerning that the pipelines will destroy their natural environment, historical and cultural heritage, they refused to build the rude oil pipelines, ever though thousands of jobs can be created and higher efficiency to transport fuel. In my point of view, what is significant here is that, people are defending their rights as a minority group. They treat these protests of building pipelines as defeating all the unfairness and discrimination happened to their tribes. One of the sentences I quoted can be a good evidence to support my point: "We're not opposed to energy independence. We're not opposed to economic development," he told CNN. "The problem we have -- and this is a long history of problems that evolved over time -- is where the federal government or corporations take advantage of indigenous lands and indigenous rights."

However, this is actually not a good way to negotiate with the government. Instead of refusing all, I think the better resolution is to compromise, for both the government and people in the tribes. The way to meet each other halfway is to achieve a higher economic growth with the pipelines but reduce as much as environmental damage as possible, such as cut the number of pipelines building under the river and move the pipelines further away from the residential area. Last, signing an agreement is also indispensable to avoid conflicts between local government and the tribes in the future.

It brings a lot of wealths and heats for Americans but those people who is native doesn’t benefit from it

Before I was in that shoes, I would like to clarify the backgrounds . First native Americans were actually Indiana and they had different types of beliefs than the White in America. In Indiana they were form in different tribals and each tribals have their own totems. After white invaded Indiana they were only few people that survived and that cause Indiana become a minority part of the socialites.

When I stand on the side of Indiana , what I feel is only anxiety and feeble. Fact that we have to speak out is Indiana nowadays is the minority groups in the whole nations that with low living standards and low literacy rates which is a sad truths that people have to acknowledge. The solution I think is only improve on the education level though is tough but is the only way to find a bubbles for us. However, the native Americans may not enjoy those benefits, and it may also cause some problems, for example like the air pollution and water pollution. Also, it may destroy their burial sites, prayer sites and culturally significant artifacts. It also has the potential to cause fire problems, which can cause serious fires when they come into contact with crude oil. In coulusion, the government should find the renewable energy to replace the oil.
In conclusion, the developer should respect the Native American's culture and belief, therefore they should not access the pipeline.

It is certainly true that building this pipeline can significantly reduces the costs brought by tranferring the crude oil which is beneficial to the American society. The parts of America lacking of oil can receive sufficient oil sources and the society can be better.

However, I do not accept these kinds of construction especially if I am one of the citizen in Dakota. I do not accept those arguments like "sacrisfy yourself to benefit the majority" because minority is a group of alive people and we cannot just ignore their opinions. There are possible negative impacts to those citizens in Dakota like the constructions are destroyed and there may be possible accidents which all leads to health concerns.

Protest may not be efficient at all because polices can therefore arrest protesters like people in article.

Dakota Access Pipeline: What's at stake?

My view of this action is neutral, with different advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that for the US government, the pipeline is not only an economic boon, it will greatly reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. The pipeline would also help free up railways to transport "crops and other commodities currently limited by crude oil cargoes". But the disadvantages are based on the concerns of local citizens, whose cemeteries, prayer sites and culturally important artifacts will be destroyed by the pipeline construction, "and environmental concerns, including possible pollution from default and eventual greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, in general, I think a solution should strike a balance between the government and citizens so that the benefits of both sides outweigh the disadvantages.

From my perspective, I understand why American government would build the oil pipelines. Crude oil is a very important input in the industires. Building these pipelines can actually reduce the cost of transporting so that it can generate a lot of economical benefits. However, the local government must provide assistance to the residents, such as financial support to reduce side effect of building the pipelines to the surrounding.
-Bob

From my perspective, I would consider its impact in different group of people.

Without considering the Indians, this pipeline can give many benefit to the US. It not only can reduce the cost of US government on the import of oil and increase government expenditure, but also can provide more job opportunities and lower the unemployment.

However, if we think about it from the perspective of the Indians, they need to pay all the benefits that this country receives. To build this pipeline, it may threatens the Tribe’s environment and would damage and destroy sites of great historic, religious and cultural significance to the Tribe because this pipeline has passing through or near many Indian reservation. Then these pipes may also leak or explode at any time, so it will pose a great safety risk to the local residents.

So I think the government need to respect them and consider about their rights, feelings and benefits. Although the government can gain many benefit from this project, they also need to execute on the basis of avoiding no impact on others.

From my perspective, based on the economic benefit and country's development, the decision is considerable. However, Native Americans as residents of America who are equally the same as the rest of its people, their losses shouldn't be ignored and the country should come up with a better idea to avoid bringing drawbacks and at the same time maximize the beneficial impact.

On one hand, both articles did mention that the pipeline that travels through 4 states indeed will not only bring the country lots of economically beneficial impact but also help the country approach the goal of sustainable development and less dependence.

On the other hand, its harm to the Native Americans is also significant. The construction will not only pollute the local environment by discharging carbon emissions but also destroy the local landscape and religious beliefs in the process of construction. According to the second article, it is not the first time that the Native Americans are treated in an unequal way. As early as the 1958s, the living environment of these people has experienced a great impact and took decades to recover from this significant impact.

Therefore, it is yet not a wise decision to implement the project without considering the welfare and loss of the Native Americans.

In my point of view, the US government should build the pipeline. The pipeline not only brings economic benefits to the local community, but also saves the local resources that were once used as replacements of oil. Advocates might claim that the rights of the indigenous people also have to be considered. However, since the local cultures are not completely destroyed, the opportunity cost has to be thought of thoroughly. Since the country takes economic development as a priority, they have to sacrifice certain things. Nonetheless, the country has to recover for the loss of the indigenous by providing them with housing and other infrastructure elsewhere.

For all the countries, the transportation of all energies are one of the biggest concern to the civilians. However, this case is happening in America. Because of the education system and society structure of America, people are always fighting for their own liberties and rights, including the natives. Actually, this is the natures of all human beings. This made may of them unwilling to, and caused a lot of losses to the local resident. Both article mentioned that the pipe line is a crossing 4 state, this will be a benefits to millions of people. but, standing in the local resident’s shoes, i believe non of the individuals will sacrifice their own land to built this energy transport routes. Meanwhile, government also shouldn’t ignore their losses and gain. It should considered in both side to make the loss of building the pipe to the least.

In my opinion, the essence of this case is the division of minority groups and the whole country, and the unequal distribution of various groups. If the Indians could be treated equally, if the pipeline was built, it would actually help improve the quality of living for the Indians, but due to the historical unequal treatment, the Indians had lost trust in the Anglo-Saxons. Assuming the U.S. government wants to move forward with the program, earning the Indians' trust may be the most important thing.

a. Do you think it is possible to follow all the advice in the article? Why or why not?

I think it may be hard for me to follow all the advices,
because for teenagers like me, we know that embarrasments or shyness cannot make friends. However, we just cannot make ourself more confident and make friendships with everyone.
It is also hard for people like me to go on those galleries, lectures at all even we know that I can make friends there simply because I do not like those activities. Therefore it may be hard for me to follow all the practices. I would say that everyone has their unique personality and characters , which results in different actions toward one thing. Therefore, when we see these advices, we need to choose which ones are best for us and which ones are not.

b. Which of the advice from the article would you attempt to follow? Why?

I think I would like to try to Take a class or join a club. This is because people joining in the same class or club shares the similar interests. It may be more easy to make friends their since people have similar interests and we can talk more naturally. Therefore with the talk, we know each other better and we can explore furthur about the interests and future planning.
And I can try to Be a good listener. This is because I can always listen to somebody patiently and give advices that are useful. This may be a good way for me to make new friends or strenthen the friendship.

c. Would you look for advice online? Why or why not?

I would like to search advices online simply because they are easier to be found if I use Internet and the suggestions are often shown useful.
However, I always see if the advices are suitable for me or not. If it does not suit my personalities, then there is no point for using that at all. Therefore, finding advices in real-life is important as well because the people around you often understand you more than people in the Internet.

Link: https://www.helpguide.org/articles/relationships-communication/%20making-good-friends.htm

Advices For Volunteering Locally & Internationally

Victoria G

Volunteering some of your time to an organisation that can make use of your skills is a brilliant way to contribute to the movement. You can volunteer locally, or you if you've got the right skills and time, you can head overseas.

Broadly speaking, you can volunteer in one of five ways locally:

- Helping with administration or a technical skill you've got
- Fundraising by putting on an event or collecting money
- Awareness raising through events, workshops or public speaking
- Advocacy and activism
- Program delivery where you help run actual programs.

For international volunteering, here are some guidelines you might want to consider to make the most of your journey (and be most effective to the communities you’re working with).

Learn about the place you’re visiting

Research the country's culture, history, current political and economic situation and the main religions and languages. The more you know, the more realistic your expectations will be and the more prepared you'll be to stave off the inevitable culture shock.

Getting ready to go

As soon as you know where you're going, check with the closest consulate or embassy to determine if you need an entry visa. There is often a lag-time of 30 - 60 days to secure a visa. If you're going with a volunteer-sending organization, ask the staff if they provide assistance with this process.

Your life at home

The steps you'll need to take to keep things humming along at home while you are off in another country will vary quite a bit depending on how long you'll be gone. For example, if you'll only be gone a few weeks, you may just need to prepay some bills, put a hold on your mail, and arrange for someone to water the plants or house your pets.

If you'll be gone for a longer term, you may want to consider renting or subletting your home. You'll need to arrange to make rent or mortgage payments from abroad as well as have someone check on things periodically (nothing like a burst water pipe or broken window to ruin your homecoming). You'll also need to make arrangements for paying your bills (automatic withdrawal payments or prepaying are good options), seeking deferral on student loans, storing or lending out belongings (including your car), and selecting someone to serve as a surrogate pet owner.

Set up a support network at home. Send a copy of your travel itinerary and contact information to a handful of close friends or family and leave a copy of your passport with someone you trust.

Your health

In order to be an effective volunteer, you'll need to take good care of your health. This means getting any necessary vaccinations, ensuring that you have medical coverage abroad and taking with you enough needed medical supplies (insulin, prescription drugs, etc.). For more information on taking care of your health, visit International Travel and Health (WHO).

Security and Safety

Explore issues of security regarding foreign visitors. For example, is it safe for foreigners to travel there? Are any particular nationalities targeted for crime or violence? Be sure to read any existing travel warnings posted by your government.

Personal Finances Abroad

Carry some local currency with you (you can exchange it at a bank before leaving your home country, exchange upon arrival, or withdraw from a local bank machine; be sure to confirm that your ATM card will work abroad as some countries have different limits for PIN lengths); traveler's checks are also a safe option but may be difficult to use in rural areas. Also, most credit cards provide protection against theft. Notify your bank and credit card companies that you'll be traveling abroad or they may interpret your new international activity as a stolen card and put a freeze on your account (requiring a cumbersome phone call to unfreeze).

What to pack

A good rule of thumb is to pack lightly. You'll need to carry things around as you travel and, especially if you're doing outdoor volunteer work, your clothing may look worse for wear by the time you're done. Check the expected climate for your time abroad and pack accordingly. Pack a few comfort items that might be hard to find abroad—whether it's your favorite hand lotion or breakfast cereal—as they can sometimes be invaluable as you navigate the ups and downs of culture shock.

In-country do's and don’ts

Collect stories, ask questions, and learn from both locals and fellow volunteers; be respectfully proactive in case they are hesitant to approach you. Be open to new things—new foods, new customs, new music, new styles of dress.

Learn local phrases - at the very least “Please” and “Thank you” which can show respect and appreciation for your host community.

Three rights of international volunteers

When you’re volunteering, there are some basic things you have a right to expect:

Feel valued. Whatever your volunteer task, you should feel that your time and contribution are valued.

Negotiate your volunteer role. Find yourself in a volunteer position that just isn't working for you? It’s OK to your volunteer manager or supervisor to discuss ways you might be able to shift your role or take on another project or position. And if you still can't find a good fit…

Leave. Not a decision to be made lightly, but if after talking to and working with your volunteer manager or supervisor, you still feel unhappy, unappreciated, or unsatisfied with your volunteer experience, it’s OK to leave. Ideally with notice.

Three responsibilities of international volunteers

Follow through on your obligations. Unless you are deeply unhappy with your situation, do what you say you'll do, whether it's honoring the volunteer role and schedule you agreed to, or providing ample notice if you're unable to perform your tasks or responsibilities.

Communicate your needs. Feel like your work isn't meaningful? Not what you thought you'd signed up for? Or just bored and ready for something else? Talk to your volunteer manager or supervisor, providing specifics about your dissatisfaction and ways to make it better. If you don't let them know that you're not satisfied they can't work with you to improve the situation.

Honor the organization's investment in you. While you may be donating your time, you are not a free resource to the organization. They’ve invested invaluable time—and probably also training, tools, and other resources—in supporting you.

Courtesies

https://www.idealist.org/en/volunteer-resources/guidelines-for-international-volunteering

https://www.globalcitizen.org/en/content/volunteering-locally/

Volunteerism is the act of contributing free labor to conduct community service or support a nonprofit organization. It is the principle of donating time and energy towards a greater cause. Volunteers help change the lives of those in their community as a social responsibility rather than receiving a financial reward.

Volunteering is important because it enables people to help and serve others in a selfless way. When individuals take the initiative to help people in the community and support philanthropic causes, it can improve the community as a whole by creating tighter bonds and forming lasting relationships. Plus, nonprofit organizations can utilize these groups of passionate volunteers to help achieve goals in making the world a better and safer place.
link: https://www.initlive.com/blog/what-is-volunteerism-a-guide-to-the-history-benefits

tart with a trusted source

Traveling to new places can be daunting. You may not be familiar with the customs, speak the language or know anybody else at first! But traveling with the purpose of giving back can open up many opportunities to connect. That’s why it’s important to organize your international volunteering through a reputable and reliable resource.

AARP’s Office of International Affairs is a great place to start. This office serves as the global ambassador of AARP, collaborating with governments, businesses, NGOs and academics to facilitate dialogue on health and economic security, global aging and other related issues. And it’s a great source to use to connect with trusted international sources.

There may also be opportunities to volunteer directly with the AARP International team in New York City and elsewhere. These volunteers cover a lot of ground, engaging with diplomatic leaders, community organizers and local citizens. Contact AARP International to find out more about how you can get out and do the most good abroad. Depending on your skill set, one AARP opportunity to explore, is the AARP/IESC China Experts Program, a new volunteer program based in China to advise Chinese organizations on global bst practices and standards.

Give back while kicking back

Beaches, mountains, camping, cruises—these are some common elements of vacations today. But they don’t have to be the only elements. Try adding volunteering to your next trip!

If want to add some good to your vacation or journey overseas, than one of the newest volunteering trends might be perfect for you. Voluntourism allows you to give back for a day, a month or an entire summer—you decide! It’s an increasingly popular type of trip that combines your personal vacation time with opportunities to give back in your destination’s community.

When planned well, voluntourism benefits everyone: You get a little break from the every day routine, and a community benefits from your helping hands. Several organizations can provide you with more voluntourism information, including factors, destinations and ideas to consider, as well as actually arranging your volunteer placement.

Extend your stay

Global volunteering doesn’t have to be a one-time or temporary experience. Several international organizations offer ways to give back for longer periods of time—extended or recurring—giving you more time to get involved in a community.

HelpAge International works for older adults’ rights globally, fighting poverty, discrimination and other limiting issues. Working across more than 65 countries, HelpAge collaborates with a network of more than 280 organizations, so there are plenty of inspiring opportunities to fit your interests, timeline and program duration.

The well-known global volunteer organization the Peace Corps trains and places volunteers in more than 60 countries for terms of two years. These volunteers work in their host countries across an array of areas, from education and environmental work to agriculture and economic development.

A lesser-known Peace Corps opportunity: shorter-term stays. The Peace Corps offers these shorter opportunities for repeat volunteers, professionals with more than 10 years of work experience, healthcare professionals and students pursuing master’s degrees. Similarly, the United Nations Volunteers, which promotes peace and development worldwide through volunteerism, offers both short-term opportunities and yearlong ones.

Destination: Create the Good
Across the world or across the street, wherever you get out and give back makes a difference. Use Create the Good as your guide—get inspired by articles and ideas and search through our list of volunteer opportunities to find a great one near you

https://createthegood.aarp.org/volunteer-ideas/international.html

Volunteerism is voluntary, deliberate service to others over time and without compensation. A key element of volunteer behavior is that the person freely chooses to help and has no expectation of pay or other compensation. Mandatory public service required by courts or schools would not meet the definition of volunteerism. The volunteer behavior must include service work, not simply a donation of money or goods. This service is long-term, repeated service, such as giving time weekly to help at a local hospital. The volunteer service is only a service if it benefits others who want help. For example, the Boy Scout who helps the blind person across the street when the blind person wants to move independently (and perhaps in another direction) would not be a volunteer.

There is possible way apart from scarcity, is that economically-disadvantaged people do not know how to utilize there resources efficiently to gain the most benefits. Even though investment in education does not directly help for education, but are-structured education is essential to improve the current situation. As education may be the most efficient and low-price way to alleviate poverty in the current society.

I think the thing that struck me the most is the introduction of these phases such as scarcity mentality and the negative income tax. It prove that dealing with poverty isn’t something easy. Usually we will always have the opportunity cost and may be very problems could be deal with. For example, providing education may be helpful but it take times and it unable to solve the short term issues. Some how it may not be useful at all due to environmental impact. So reducing property isn’t a slim thing to do, and it is the most important thing that we should solve todayI

Adam

The most amazing idea to me is that poverty is not because of lack of education. I previously believed that people tend to be poor because they lack the essential skills to find a better job. For example, when China tried to eliminate poverty, the government spend a lot of money teaching the poor people skills like cooking and crafting that could help them make a living. However, this is not a general solution, and education in general is not the solution to poverty. Many things that people learn in school do not benefit people at all, especially when they are poor. For instance, a poor farmer who does not even have enough rice to cook for dinner would have nothing to do with Newton's laws. Education should benefit people directly.

It is means that people are lack of one character, but the way to solve it is to train them like what we commonly do for them in the community. It is common, but it is wrong. For instance, we teach them how to live correctly, but they still live in their own way. That is the problem and all the things that we did previously is wrong and ineffective. So, his speech removes my struggling. But there are still plenty of people teach them how to be rich instead of provide benefits to them.

The idea that ‘poverty is not lack of knowledge' really struck me. Because I always believe that poor people is not intelligent enough to have enough knowledge. But the fact is that poor people have so many things to struggle with, including food, resources, house, money, which let them have no idea of learning more or have higher education level. For example, the poor people need to put their basic needs, like food and house, in their first position instead of education. Thus, although it is smart enough of the poor people, they will still choose not to learn that much knowledge.

In my opinion, the cost of solving the problems with poverty is not as high we imagine.According to the vedio,it’ll just cost 175billion of America to solve this and only four times the united states’sstates military budget. Only 1% of the GDP in the richest country can sloveslive the poverty. For example from 2011-to 2014, China’s special poverty alleviation funds from the central government increased from 27.2 billion yuan to 43.3 billion yuan, with an average annual growth rate of 18.1%. So ending poverty is possible and at a low cost. We just need to keep our responsibility to help the poor.

The poor learning things and can come out wiser, but no enough. Do the poor really is because the lack of knowledge and education? For example, the people in mountainous areas really lack is the vitality and vision of wealth. They may not lack opportunities, but they lack the courage to seize them. If they want to change poverty, it is not because education is not important, but because their funds do not allow them to have educational opportunities. All kinds of factors can lead to poverty. If funds allow, does lack of education still exist? Not saying that poverty is not because the lack of education, it is because they have no choice, in reality, the fund is the most important issues.

In Bregman's talk, he mentioned that the most effective way of eradicating poverty lies behind thoughts that scholars mentioned hundred years ago, just that the politicians nowadays are more focusing on superficial solutions. He mentioned that by simply giving out money -- spending only 175 billion USD on setting basic income guarantee -- poverty in the US can be effectively solved, forecasted by economists. This is very optimistic, which truly shocked me, which I never thought that the most direct solution of poverty -- such a harsh problem -- would simply be giving out money. However I pondered, would the estimations be too optimistic? Are the scholars only assuming that all poor who receives guaranteed income would make good use of them and make bright decisions, then to say that poverty can simply be solved by this way? That casts doubts on this ideal solution, but let's wait and see if the predicted change can really take place.

Victoria

The idea of the paternalistic bureaucrat in the video struck me and made me reflect on these questions: What is the reason that makes us misunderstand the need of the poor? What do the poor really need, and why was the experiment by Canadian researchers in Dauphin a resounding success?

Through my understanding in the past, the key to helping the poor and eradicating poverty is to contribute, as much as we can, especially things that are less pointful for us but might be appreciated by the poor people. However, according to the speaker Bergman, the action of donating may not be as effective and neither directly help the poor with what they need. Derived from that, I think what we are doing could not be completely denied since we are indeed trying to figure out a way to make a difference regardless of some self-appointed bureaucrat. We should start reflecting on the effectiveness of doing so that the priority of our actions is always trying to help the poor with what they need, such as increasing the main physical provision to help mitigate their scarcity mentality which could be the dominant contributing factor to their poverties. A mental change is also what we can try to do which could totally affect the poor from having a negative lifestyle and mindset.

In this atmosphere, almost all people believe that gathering with family will be a very happy thing and traditions occurs with the belief(dumplings meaning wealth, pocket money meaning security for children). This belief is inheritated by us and many Chinese also believe that staying in a big family will be very enjoyable. Gathering with family has become part of Chinese culture. The belief system guide people what to do and as time pass, it becomes part of the culture eventually. The way of living is just the extension of culture, therefore it is affected by belief system as well. That is why I say belief system shapes cultures and ways of living in a large extent. The affect the belief system brought are inheritated generations and generations. Many people may have different understanding based on the belief and they make changes or add traditions to further influence the way how people live.

In my opinion, belief guides people's practical actions. The function of belief for believers is mainly to constrain and motivate them, telling them what they cannot do, what they should do and encouraging them to fight for it. The influence of belief also has promoting and hindering forces in social development. When a belief conforms to the direction of cultural development, it can promote social progress. On the contrary, it hinders the development of society, such as feudalistic superstition.

There will be also a lot of restrictions from the belief system like no eating of ox. Moreover, many relationships are formed based on this belief system, which these form the culture, ritual, relationships, restrictions. We can say that belief systems deeply shapes the culture. It can also form the society and reflect how the society is like. Take an example, communism. Throughout this belief, many countries were built up and forming the society. Moreover, beliefs of people shows how the society looks like. The individual belief can be easily altered by the society. As she mentioned,”Spanish made her an introverted person while she’s speaking in Spanish,” in specific, she found herself reluctance to think aloud in large groups and scare to make mistakes. However, hers personality switched as she switched the Language used to English. “…..English was always the language of leisure, and it was the language of every summer’s happy-wet holidays in…” Obviously that English made her a much more confident person.

I have used Mandarin for the majority of time in my life, and being introvert is what takes up most of my personality. That is the opposite when speaking English. I learnt English for school purposes, and I use English for all my papers, for MUN, and for many formal meetings. These activities require me to be very logical and talk about my ideas. Therefore, I am more comfortable expressing my logical thinking and ideas in English. I also speak French, but at a relatively low fluency. I leant French with a private tutor, and we mainly focused on everyday French. Therefore, I am more of a friendly person when using French.
