We tried to make this piece in correlation with both of our individual concepts. My friend’s concept was to make a piece while gaining inspiration from different types of music, while my concept was to focus on destruction, chaos and violence. We decided to listen to the same playlists while painting.

Currently, the work is not even half-way complete, but the imagery depicts a city metropolis.

Last month, the IMF announced a “Bretton Woods Moment” and spoke about the potential of moving towards a digitised financial system. The original Bretton Woods Agreement took place in 1944 and resulted in the US Dollar being put onto the gold standard until 1971.

The piece also focuses on the current chaos and the potentiality of further chaos as a result of the Covid pandemic and the resultant financial crisis. Around 20% of US dollars (world reserve currency) in circulation today were printed in the last year — what will this lead to? Inflation? Deflation? Hyperinflation?

The chinchilla monster on the top left corner of the painting is inspired by modern day philosopher, Johnny Goulding’s, work of “The 9th Ninth Technology of Otherness: A Certain Kind of Debt” — her ideas of “uni-ego” vs “multi-ego” — put simply, in-group-isolation vs untethered empathy and compassion. Both standpoints have their own justifiable internal logic and cohesion with it all being just a question of polarisation.
