In our class readings I really like these two quotes from Turino. They give great insight into what identity is and how it involves more than just ourselves.

“Our identity involves the partial and variable selection of habits and attributes that we use to represent ourselves to ourselves and to others, as well as those aspects that are perceived by ourselves and by others as salient.” (Turino, pg. 102)

“Identity always involves twin aspects of unifying ourselves (emphasizing similarities) with some people and differentiating ourselves from others.” (Turino, pg.105)

Growing Up Country

My parents tell me that when they drove me home from the hospital a few days after I was born, country music seemed to calm me during the drive. Their love for classic country music grew on me over the years and I have learned to appreciate it as my parents do. My parents grew up listening to artist such as Charlie Pride, George Strait, Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams, and Loretta Lynn. These are just the few of many artists that we would listen to on every car road trip with my Dad singing the loudest out of the whole family. Some of my favorites still to this day include Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Wille Nelson, and Patsy Cline. Most of my friends are not fans of this kind of music since to them it sounds old and outdated. To me, this music takes me back to my childhood and reminds me of home and my family. Country music definitely has my heart.

I was involved in musical theatre in high school which really opened me up to the world of Broadway. I felt like I knew every song from various shows such as RENT, Wicked, Chicago, the Sound of Music, and many more other shows. I love the emotions and big sound that comes from musical theatre. It transports you to another world and another lifetime that is so fun to sing along to or be apart of. Show tunes are what I tend to listen to most in the car when I am by myself. I definitely jam out and sing my loudest, not really caring if anyone can hear or see me. I think that everyone should take the time to support the theatre. Go to local shows and get lost in a world that is different than your own, it's really quite the experience!

When people meet me for the first time and if music is the topic of conversation I tend to know and respect various artists that persons my listen to. I have mentioned in previous posts that I just love music and listen to all kinds of music. I tend to listen to certain kinds of music based on the people I am around or the mood I am in. I guess that makes me more of a social music listener. I love to hear what other people listen to and tend to ask people for recommendations of music, no matter what it may be.
