But they don't know that they are in another dimension, and it takes a while for them to figure it out. And what they do in the alternate dimension has an impact on the 'real world' (eg. maybe the Parliament buildings disappeared because of what they did in the alternate dimension). And if they disappear Craigdarroch Castle, they will never make it home! And there are evil spirits living in that dimension that could cause them trouble. The trolls built the portal to trap the mermaids during the war, but accidentally created the evil spirits. And the spirits can infect people and cause them to crumble the buildings. Originally, it started because a human caught a mermaid fishing, and now they want revenge. When the neighbours complain, the mermaids threaten to eat them. So the fishermen on the wharf are trying to keep the whole mess on the down low, and hide the issue. But the neighbours are suspicious. The mermaids can disguise as humans and spy on the rest of the city. But every time they turn into a human, one of their hairs turns gray, which sucks because they are narcisstic. If they spend too much time on land, they turn into a human. The mermaids also have trained the seals to be attack seals. Either the person has to have some type of superpower or they have to find gems or something in order to bring the beach back to life.

the gems were made out of peoples dreams that came true? OR, the gems could be made out everyone's IDEA of a good life OR OR, THE GEMS COULD BE PEOPLE'S SOULS

Later, some people decide that, since they can't seem to be stopped, they need to be studied. So, upon studying them, they discover that the snatchers don't specifically need humans, just something high in fat. The take to feeding them, to prevent children from going missing.

They steal children because they are small, and can't take adults.

Whoever eats the mushrooms can connect  with animals - but the animals might not want to talk to them. Bigfoot is growing because of the mushrooms and getting bigger. (Bigfoot might be named Fred, or Chakotay). So I guess I'll do vancouver island. I was thinking that basically a long time ago there was a  organisation that was deemed 'harmful' (in reality it wasn't), one day they got discovered by idk the government or something, and then everyone got tossed into cells, forced to do labour under the hot sun until it was night, it didn't matter if their muscles ached or were on the verge of splintering  apart, if they collapsed, their body would be dragged away to the what is now known the inner harbour. Eventually, when everyone in the organisation "died", the government realised this could be harmful to their rep, so they erased everyone's identity (like, passports, medical records, ect), then moved on like nothing happened. 

Now for those part of the organisation, their resentment towards the government was so strong that they turned into spirit-but-also-human beings (it's complicated). Human because they took shape of..well. A human being, (and also because they could reproduce and die), spirit because they can't be seen by mortals. So anyway, the spirit-humans, reproduced and blah blah blah,eventually they formed their own civilisation right smack in downtown. Soon they discovered that some had powers. And, they found out that they could use the technology that they invented to form what we would call... drugs. As you recall spirit-humans hated the mortals, so they decided to use the drugs to transport them temporarily to downtown, gather data in a span of 5 hours, automatically be transported back, hand in the data to the scientific researching peeps in hopes that it would take them one step closer on taking down the whole mortal world, which would allow their world to take over instead. However, there was a risk in taking these drugs, if their energy flowing around their body wasn't meeting expectations, taking it would cause them to overdose in downtown. 

Fast-forward a lot of years later, a rift between the mortal and the spirit world was caused by..um..let's say SOMETHING (Haven't thought about it) The spirit-humans could use their powers on the mortal world, appear freely at night until sunrise. Obviously they attacked, the mortals invented techs and a buncha stuff to combat it.

Eventually, a scaled creature starts to visit their dreams, and tells them to follow the voice. 
They are not stupid, so they don't, but the dreams get more consistent, and their reflection seems to be disappearing in patches.

Eventually, they feel that they have no choice but to do as the scaled creature says, especially as it claims to need their help ridding the world of a malevolent being. The being is what seems to be a feathered version of the scaled one.

They walk out to the area, and see a lake, which they are encouraged to swim in. Once they do, their lungs feel as if they are collapsing, and even as they try to get back to shore, they sink.
And they are not alone.
There are around 20 other kids there, all having been fooled by the same creature, and in all of their vision, is the feathered one. This one is angry, not at them, but at the scaled one.

"I may be a murderer, but I will not have *children* sent to attack me. You have done nothing wrong. This is between me and them."

The feathered one basically did kill people, but in the realm were the two creatures came from. A 14-year-old kid in port alberni tries to stop this but ends up forming a deep bond with a particular dragon and realises that the dragons do no harm. They try to tell the village but no one believes them. The humans start to hunt the dragons because their horns are very valuable, but finally the kid and the dragon help the others get back to somewhere?? on Vancouver Island (haven't decided yet), and now they are all in a safe community.
