Before the Japanese Invasion, how old were you? What were you and your family doing?

I was 17 or 18. I was a student. And I had just finished my ‘O” Levels. Because the invasion happened during my ‘O’ levels, my results didn’t come back until after the war. My father had a shop selling black silk. My mother was a housewife.

Gay World was one of three amusement parks built in Singapore before World War II and around which Singapore's nightlife revolved from the 1920s to the '60s. The other two were New World and Great World. Gay World was a popular entertainment joint before the advent of television and shopping malls. It combined a heady mix of eastern and western forms of entertainment including cabaret, operas, movies, gaming, sport matches, stunts and shopping. Ravaged by fires many times, Eng Wah Organisation terminated the lease to the park in 2000, marking Gay World's exit from Singapore's amusement park scene.

-An interview to recount on the incident in the 1930s
One of the most surprising things that my uncle could tell me was that gambling was carried out at “Happyworld” which was an amusement park located in Geylang. His parents would work there at night, manning the gambling stalls. He was even able to describe some of the games to me. I found this really surprising because the last thing I would expect people to do during these critical times was to gamble! Gambling as it turned out was a form of recreation for the people. It was a form of escape from the harsh conditions of the Japanese Occupation. People gained hope from winning at the game of chance.

During the occupation, Chinese New Year and other festivals were still celebrated. My uncle remembers playing with his kampung friends and swimming in the sea. Again we can attribute such instances of social behaviour to a psychological need to return things to their natural order, even in times of adversity.

Her father had died towards the end of the Japanese Occupation, and my grandmother, being illiterate, could not help much to get her two daughters an education. So my mother started school in Primary 1 all over again, in Chong Hock Girls’ School, a Chinese school, at 10 years old. She was active in the dance troupe and played basketball too! And after school, she had to go home to help my grandmother sell cigarettes just outside their home. She recalled once she returned from school and my grandmother was nowhere to be found. Their neighbours told her she had been arrested by the police for illegal hawking.
