Hello everyone! Today, I'd like to talk about the 'ripple effect of positivity' through Linda Sue Park's inspiring novel, "A Long Walk to Water." In particular, I focused on the economic ripple effects brought about by the construction of wells.

Reading this book, I deeply empathized with the impact of water scarcity on individuals' lives and communities. I especially noticed the remarkable changes that came to the village after the well was built, going beyond just solving the drinking water problem. I believe that the issue of water is not just a humanitarian concern, but a core factor influencing a society's economic development and sustainability. I wanted to reveal how one positive change can trigger a domino effect of numerous positive economic and social changes, which I call the 'positive ripple effect'.

My research questions are as follows: What sequential positive changes did well construction in "A Long Walk to Water" bring to the economic activities and quality of life of the residents of South Sudan? And what are the economic ripple effects of improved access to clean water on individuals' and communities' productivity, educational opportunities, and health?

My goal is to analyze the direct economic effects of well construction, such as time savings, increased labor force, and reduced disease. I also aim to explore how these direct effects create indirect and long-term positive ripples, such as expanded educational opportunities, improved agricultural productivity, and activated small-scale economic activities. Ultimately, I intend to understand and present the importance of sustainable local economic development and the value of investing in basic infrastructure like wells.

For this research, I primarily analyzed Linda Sue Park's novel "A Long Walk to Water". As supplementary materials, I referred to reports from international organizations such as the UN, UNICEF, and the World Bank, activity reports and case studies from non-profit organizations like Water for South Sudan and Charity: Water, and academic papers and in-depth articles related to the economics of water scarcity.

In "A Long Walk to Water," Nya spends a significant amount of time fetching water daily and suffers from diseases due to contaminated water. However, after the well is built, children are able to go to school and women engage in other activities, showing that water scarcity directly leads to 'time poverty' and 'lost opportunities'. I confirmed that a well is not just about water supply, but a key to unlocking quality of life and potential.

According to UNICEF reports, women and girls spend 90% of the time fetching water, which significantly restricts their participation in education and economic activities. Real-world examples from Water for South Sudan presented specific success stories such as improved health, increased agricultural productivity, and the formation of small markets after well construction. Through this, I was able to concretize the economic ripple effects of well construction and realized the importance of community participation for sustainable operation.

The second phase aims for economic revitalization. This involves providing small-scale agricultural technology education and support utilizing surplus water, and supporting small-scale livestock farming based on water supply. Additionally, vocational training programs for women and youth will be implemented, utilizing the time saved from fetching water, to encourage their participation in economic activities.

The third phase is investing in human capital. Improved water access will encourage increased school attendance and enhance the educational environment. Furthermore, linking with hygiene education will contribute to disease prevention and health promotion. A healthy and educated workforce directly leads to increased productivity.

Slide 11: Phase 4: Strengthening Community-Based Self-Reliance (Ensuring Sustainability)

The final phase is ensuring sustainability. This involves supporting community-led cooperative models, such as well management committees and joint sales of produce. By reinvesting a portion of the profits to create a community development fund, the self-reliance of the community is strengthened.

Through this research, I rediscovered the importance of 'water.' I deeply realized that water is not just about quenching thirst, but the very first link in the chain that leads to education, health, labor, and ultimately, the economic prosperity of a society.

I also witnessed the power of the 'positive ripple effect'. I confirmed the infinite potential of how a small positive change, namely well construction, can bring about incredibly large ripple effects and transform individuals' lives and the entire community. I felt that the hypothesis, "when a positive situation comes, positive situations connected to it continue to follow," is very powerful.

Finally, I reconsidered how crucial investment in basic infrastructure – wells, education, and sanitation – is for enabling self-reliance in developing countries, rather than just providing food aid. I realized that this is truly 'sustainable development' in its truest sense.
