         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>The settlers were attracted to the idea of moving west because they were slaveholders from the south and wanted new land for cotton. </p></li><li><p>They justify their right to settle in the lands because they felt that they deserve to have the land because they wanted it and 'needed' it.  </p></li><li><p>They may feel protected by using the military support when accessing the new land that they want.</p></li></ol>]]></description>
