New Freedoms – After slavery ended, African Americans could marry legally, reunite with families, and attend school for the first time. The Freedmen’s Bureau helped with food, jobs, and education.

New Rights – The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments ended slavery, made African Americans citizens, and gave Black men the right to vote. Many voted and even held office during Reconstruction.

New Struggles – Even with progress, challenges remained. Sharecropping trapped families in debt, Black Codes limited rights, and groups like the KKK used violence to stop African Americans from gaining power.

Freedmans Bureau

- created by congress with a goal of giving Africans proper freedoms. African Americans were now allowed to get education with help of the Freedmans Bureau creating schools for previous slaves.

13th, 14th, & 15th Amendment were all established to help give African Americans proper equal rights.

Sharecropping created; one step up from slavery as now farmers were paid with food/crops

Before the civil war enslaved couples would be separated at any time.

Sharecropping trapped families in a cycle of debt.

Enslaved people would leave plantations to test if their freedom was real.

The Lost Cause - This was southerners that idolized the pre civil war south, being slavery, white dominance, and plantations. It eventually developed into a group of people who were violent being the KKK, White League, Knights of the white camellia, Red shirts, Pale faces.

Debt Peonage - It was a share cropping system that aimed to trap people into debt. They took a portion of their large plantation and made it into smaller plots and signed contracts and had them share some of their harvest to the owner, eventually leading them to be in debt.

Carpetbags/Scalawags - Carpetbags were northerner's who moved to the south and were seen as "opportunist" by the south when they were trying to rebuild it. Scalawags were white southerners who sided with Radical Republicans and were deemed as traders.

15th Amendment - Even after the 15th amendment was created, women still couldn't vote. The amendment only pertained to men.

2 New Terms - Carpetbaggers which were northerners who moved South after the war. They were also seen as opportunists by Southerners, but some invested in rebuilding. They helped strengthen the Republican Party in the South. Scalawags which were white Southerners who supported Radical Republicans.
They were viewed as traitors or “scoundrels” by neighbors. They were also accused of exploiting Reconstruction laws and funds

New Struggles - To reclaim power, some Southerners organized extremist groups. The most infamous was the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), but there were others: the White League, Knights of the White Camellia, Red Shirts, and Pale Faces.

There were a lot of new freedoms after slavery ended

On the 15th Amendment, people of color could not be denied the right to vote anymore based on their race.

13th Amendment was when Slavery was abolished and the 14th Amendment was when African Americans were declared citizens and had equal protection under the law.

FREEDMENS BUREAU- when all the slaves were "free" they had little money, clothes, and safe places to go so congress created the bureau of refugees. the freedmen's bureau worked to legalize marriages, protect families and travelers and negotiate labor contracts with former slave owners. they also helped put together schools to educate the enslaved.

CARPETBAGGERS & SCALAWAGS- CARPETBAGGERS were northerners who moved to the south after the civil war often carrying bags made of carpet fabric and they were trying to help with the reconstruction. scalawags they were southerners who sided with the radical republicans during reconstruction

BLACK CODES- they lowered social and economic position of African Americans, it banned African Americans from owning guns and renting land. it also forced African Americans to pay special taxes if they wanted to work in jobs other than farms. And last but not least it allowed courts to remove children from parents deemed "unfit" and place them to work for slave owners
