Temuulen: Realism in Today's World
Realism is the idea that countries always put their own power and security first because the world is dangerous. For example, NATO is a military alliance where countries work together to protect themselves, showing that nations focus on their own survival. Realism helps us understand why countries compete and prepare for threats instead of fully trusting each other.

Constructivists point out that the Cold War involved not just power, but also ideas and identities: capitalism versus communism, democracy versus authoritarianism. The U.S. and USSR viewed each other as ideological opponents, which strengthened their hostile policies. The end of the Cold War from 1989 to 1991 is often cited as a constructivist example. Under Gorbachev, Soviet identity shifted with “new thinking.” Norms of openness and cooperation appeared, and the rivalry ended without a major war. In a playground setting, kids playing tag adding a norm of a safe zone can be seen as constructivism. If someone disagrees the kids debate and come up with a new solution.

Even if their rules were different than "normal" it would be ok because they all agree to it.

A current event that I thought of where identity and norms shape politics is happening right now between the United States and France, even though it was not initiated by a politician. Candace Owens, a conservative talk show host and personality, accused France's president's wife of being transgender, which goes against conservative "norms" here and honestly hiding something like that as a politician here in the U.S. on either side would be a breach of societal norms. However, because the Macrons refute her claims, it is causing conflict between the two countries as France brings legal action against Candace, and ask President Trump to tell her to stop. Now, Candace continuing to talk is also breaking norms and shaping the relationship between the U.S. and France.

A playground that aligns with the theory of realism would be the kid that always wants to be the line leader. They want to be in control of the line and put their self-interest first, which would be the first one to make it to the playground.

An example of realism we see in the real world is the growing number of tariffs the United States is slapping onto its trading partners. Post-Cold War there was a surge in globalization and a more interconnected international community. This led to the widespread open market and trade with previously hostile states. However, this notion of liberalism is currently being challenged by our current administration's more realistic approach, in the form of trade wars. In the fight to rein in inflation, the Trump administration wants to balance its trading practices with other countries in the hopes of boosting the economy. The only real way to do so is by implementing tariffs in the hopes that countries come running to Trump for a trade deal, oftentimes with very favorable conditions for the US. This is a prime example of President Trump's America First policy that puts the American economy first, without any regard as to how tariffs may affect another country's economy.

Initially, slavery was internationally accepted, but through societal views there was a shift. Slavery became a violation as societies redefined their understanding of what is considered "ethical." Changing attitudes, advocacy, etc. reshapes social structures through ongoing interaction.
