They cleverly included some tricky times tables and then had a blast putting their classmates to the test! It was wonderful to see their creativity, teamwork, numeric and digital skills all come together in such a fun way. 🌟

Now, where to start....?

We read and followed instructions.

We used non-standard measurements to measure ingredients.

We learnt about yeast.

We now know how to knead.

We learnt that bread takes time and care to make.

We learnt how to cut a ball of dough into 8.

We realised it's the yeast that makes the bubbles in bread.

We learnt how to share tasks within a team.

We learnt that an oven needs to be very hot to bake bread so adults help us keep safe. 🔥

We tried pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds before and after they were baked.

We found out that homemade bread is delicious! 😋

Tomorrow we'll learn how we get flour. 🤔

The class worked brilliantly in the pairs to listen to and follow instructions, take turns, and learn new skills such as rolling, twirling and cutting.

And then we got to eat our efforts fresh from the oven! Yum!

There were some wonderfully creative and imaginative creations, and the pupils really enjoyed the challenge of working together in a different and playful way. 🎭✏️

Today we put our learning into practice to created these wonderful still life pumpkin drawing using chalk pastels.

As we say (everyday) - “Practice makes progress”. And boy have we made some progress with our art skills this week. Frighteningly good detail!

Each group were given a character, setting and object to include in their stories and they all worked so well demonstrating excellent creativity, team work and communication skills to collaboratively create and agree their stories.

We then wrote up our stories ensuring we followed the story mountain rules of a beginning, middle and end.

We also had heaps of fun acting them out during circle time.

We definitely have a class of budding authors, illustrators and actors. For sure!

We have been working on our number bonds to 10. This will help us with the make 10 strategy with our adding.

We learned how to transform our own portraits into bold, colourful Pop Art, inspired by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Using the Photos app and our creativity, we edited our black-and-white photos by adding bright backgrounds, fun doodles, and speech bubbles — creating our own modern twist on classic pop ar

We have been learning about measuring mass (how much something weighs).

We know that you can use scales to weigh different objects.

We wanted to know how to use scales correctly so we thought it would be a good idea to make biscuits!

We followed a recipe and made sure our scales were set a zero before we started to weigh out our flour, butter and sugar.

Through hands-on activities, they experimented with shape, colour, and perspective, transforming their ideas into art.

At the end of the session, everyone received their own sketchbook as a special gift from the gallery — perfect for continuing their sketching and creative ideas at home! ✏️✨

To celebrate, we enjoyed s’mores and hot chocolate together in the beautiful autumnal woods.

The class also made leaf piles for hedgehogs to hide and stay cosy over the colder months. 🦔🍁

Outdoor learning develops a wide range of skills including social and emotional skills like cooperation, communication, resilience, and confidence. It also fosters cognitive skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving through hands-on experiences. Additionally, it improves physical skills like fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and spatial awareness, and promotes environmental awareness and a connection to nature. It is also super fun!

We explored incredible artworks like the shimmering Amethyst Cave and the mysterious Whispering Angels, taking in the sculptures, landscapes and outdoor installations. Afterwards, we took part in an art workshop where we recreated our own amethyst-inspired pieces - layering colourful rectangles with oil pastels and then adding 3D crystal shapes using pencil and triangles. A creative and inspiring trip full of discovery!🎨✨

Even though we were freezing, the class still enjoyed it far too much! 😄

We explored the sculptures, learned about the artists, and even took part in an art workshop using glue guns and mini birch sticks, inspired by Antony Gormley’s work. The creativity was incredible!

A school buddy provides social, emotional, and academic benefits for both students, as the children develop positive relationships, improve social skills, and build confidence. Buddies provide companionship, and foster a sense of belonging. Our buddies further learn valuable skills like patience, leadership, and responsibility.

Having a buddy and being a buddy is a wonderful experience and develops very special friendships. We can't wait till our next buddy time.

Group 1 had an amazing 3-hour skiing session, and the pupils loved every minute of it.

So much progress was made in such a short time – with some natural skiers shining on the slopes!

Not everyone is a natural spider 🕷️, but everyone showed real bravery, stepped out of their comfort zone, and gave it a go.👏

Parts of the lake were even frozen, so we ended up breaking the ice ourselves to get going!

Group 2 were the first group this week to take on gorge walking – and what a way to do it!

Brave jumps into the cold water (all safely prepared with the right clothing and equipment), stunning views, and lots of determination from everyone!

Thanks to Miss Stickland’s throwback game from her own school days, the girls have been creating the funniest stories 😂✍️.

They have loved it so much that they even played with Mr Napier before bedtime tonight! So many laughs, creativity, and great memories made! ❤️

There was fantastic teamwork along the way, with everyone helping each other climb, scramble and support one another through the gorge.

By the time we headed back to camp, the water pouring out of everyone’s bog boots looked more like warm soup than river water.

Tired legs, big smiles, and memories made!

Everyone worked together to help get the canoes down to the water and off on our adventure.

When we reached the wee island, we spotted chunks of ice still sitting in the corners as the lake slowly defrosts – such a cool sight to see!

Great teamwork, brilliant attitudes, and lots of smiles all round.

Group 1 were already enjoying time on the wee island when Group 3 arrived to join them.

We spent some time playing together, exploring the area and soaking up the scenery before heading back out on the water as one big group.

Everyone worked brilliantly as a team to paddle back and help pack the canoes away on the trolley.

After a lovely final chat with Scrutts, reflecting on the week’s successes and talking about staying connected to nature beyond Lagganlia, we are now on our way home.

What an unforgettable week full of adventure, laughter and memories – we can’t wait to share all the stories back at school 😊

Micro:bits are small devices that help children learn about coding and digital creativity. Pupils learned how to code Micro:bits to make messages and simple interactive projects, while building confidence with technology and problem-solving.

The children were highly engaged and really enjoyed the session. We’re looking forward to using Micro:bits again in class to build on these skills.

A big thank you to the pupils and staff from George Watson’s College for a great experience!

The pupils shared lots of great ideas about how we can reduce energy use across the school. Our next steps will be to:

• create posters to remind everyone to switch off lights and equipment

• design a weekly checking sheet for Eco Monitors to gather evidence and track how we’re doing

• make certificates to celebrate classes who are doing well

  
  

We’re looking forward to getting this project underway and making a positive difference together!

We concluded our learning with a Burns Supper, including the Selkirk Grace, haggis neeps and tatties, cranachan and Auld Lang Sang. P3B made the cranachan.

We used macaroni last week to help us improve our punctuation with accurate use of speech marks for direct speech.

The challenge was not only to create the sturdiest bridge, but also the most cost-efficient design, encouraging pupils to think carefully about materials and budgeting. There was lots of problem-solving, teamwork, and creative thinking on display!

A huge thank you to Edinburgh College for providing such an engaging and hands-on learning experience for our pupils!

Our P7 pupils recently took part in a transition Ceilidh dance session at Tynecastle High School, alongside pupils from the other cluster primary schools.

During the session, the children had the opportunity to learn three different dances, practise following steps, dance together as a large group, and meet the PE teacher from Tynecastle. It was a fantastic chance for them to build confidence, work collaboratively, and experience a small part of secondary school life in a fun and active way.

It was quite frustrating for some of us as our willow circles kept pinging open and we had to start again, but we learned to persevere and not give up.

Later we watched a video of pair of blue tits, building a nest in a bird box, the eggs hatching and the parents feeding them. It was funny and fascinating!

Whilst we'd not usually pick flowers or leaves, today's task was to create something beautiful with nature and we learned how to carefully detach the exact amount without damaging plants.

As part of exploring where our food comes from P2 have been learning about the journey of Banana's all the way from the tropical climate of Costa Rica. We couldn't quite afford a whole class trip to Costa Rica and so instead went to the sunny Glasshouse at Saughton Park to look at some lush tropical plants. We used our observation, focus and blending skills to create our artwork using oil pastels.

P2a enlisted the help of their P6 buddies to support them to bring their initial individual robot designs together to then agree and create a final design. All the groups demonstrated excellent team working skills of communication, collaboration and adaptability. We certainly have a class of budding engineers in the making!

After finalising their designs, the children got to work on building their 1meter tall robots out of collected junk! Working in their trio's, they all worked positively and effectively - collaborating, negotiating and problem solving independently. The resulting robots models were ROBOTASTIC!

We decided to have a healthy breakfast at school and we really enjoyed eating our breakfast and chatting to our friends. Some of us even tried something new! Toast and honey was a huge hit!

We then went on to use our writing skills to write about the fruit we tried an we used our data handling skills to collect data about our favourite fruit, using tally marks. We displayed this data on a graph.

After performing for staff and pupils yesterday, our P7s gave another amazing performance to parents today. The energy, confidence and enthusiasm on stage were incredible, and it was lovely to see everyone supporting each other and having so much fun!

From the singing and dancing to the acting and teamwork, the pupils should be so proud of what they achieved. We certainly are!

What a wonderful way to spend these final weeks of primary school. We can’t wait to see all our P7s continue to shine as they move on to high school. ⭐❤️

Our P7 pupils had a fantastic time today enjoying inflatables, pillow bash battles, pizza, party food and a dance party to finish the celebrations.

The giant slide was a huge hit, and there was plenty of laughter, friendly competition and unforgettable memories made throughout the day.

The weather tried its best to interrupt the fun, and there may have been a few soggy socks by home time, but thankfully it didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits!

A wonderful day for a wonderful year group.

As our P7s prepare to leave Balgreen, we are so grateful that they were able to enjoy such a memorable celebration with their friends!
