"The Little Boy" Poem Reflection

This poem is one that has resonated with me, as there are many similarities in which the student in the poem, was similar to myself and my own experience with being taught Arts subjects in school. During my primary years of schooling, guided drawings and guided art projects were used often.

As I continued to study Visual Art during my high school years, there was more freedom in these classes which nurtured creativity. I struggled to be creative in these classes and create art pieces which where wholly mine (I often used others for inspiration). I never thought that the 'art' teaching that occurred during my primary school years could have impacted significantly in later years of my life, however reading this poem I can see how it unintentionally did.

I vow that in my future classrooms, I will foster creativity so my students don't always draw red flowers with green stems.

In what ways have the arts been important in your own education? I enjoyed and studied Visual Art throughout my schooling (p-12). Especially in high-school where lots of personal change and development is occurring, art classes were always somewhere where you could freely express your thoughts, emotions and let go of any frustrations. I feel as though that class was an important space for many students at school.

In what ways are the arts important in your own life? Do you think the arts shape your thinking in any way? I feel as though the arts aren't massively important in my life currently. After leaving high-school, I have found that there isn't a space for the Arts in my busy life-style.

Can you recall any instances when an experience with the arts caused you to consider something in a new way? What was the art form and experience, and how did it cause you
to consider something in a new way? The major art form that I find pulls at my heart strings the most is music. Music can deeply impact my way of thinking, for example, watching a sad youtube clip can easily be made more sad with sombre music playing in the background. Similarly, listening to suspenseful music when watching a horror movie (this always seems to make it scarier).

I have chosen a few things from my overgrown garden that symbolise mine and my partners busy lives. As seen in the photo, my assemblage is quite chaotic which is what we are feeling currently, busy and stressed and therefore our garden has missed some TLC. I placed the plants in a less aesthetically pleasing way which I think displays the feelings I intended it to.

A digital technology that could be utilised to create a game character could be https://charactercreator.org/ where all aspects of the avatar can be edited to suit what the student envisions. There are many school-appropriate YouTube videos of game demonstrations that could be explored by the students and discussions could be had about the meaning behind the costumes and dialogue that different game characters have. Students could also discuss the portrayals of the characters and if there is meaning behind this.

Sustainability.

This tutorial activity included the use of unconventional items to make art. At first I was overwhelmed of how to make something with rubbish. However, as I began cutting and placing items onto a white background, slowly I started to see a tree. I latched onto this idea, cutting shapes and gluing them to make this artwork. As i was completing this artwork I began to think of the irony of creating an artwork of a tree out of paper materials from the waste. It put into perspective the amount of waste we as humans use, and how we take nature, such as trees for granted. Sustainability is an important topic which I feel as though I emanated through this artwork. I am looking forward to what other artworks I will have the opportunity to create throughout this unit.

Some characters seem intrigued, some seem mortified, some seem to be occupied with other thoughts entirely.
What do you wonder? I wonder what the man is saying to the children who can't bear to watch. I wonder why it this experiment is necessary. I wonder if the bird is in pain. I wonder why this is being done in the middle of the night and why children are present. I wonder what each person in the photo is thinking.

Stop Motion - Sustainability

This activity was another one which overwhelmed me and made me doubt my creative ability. Stop motion animation is something I had never experimented with prior to this activity and I wasn't optimistic when developing the plan for this animation. Firstly I believed that I had to create everything within the motion picture, and after multiple attempts do draw the same tree multiple times, I quickly gave up and decided I would find some creative commons cartoon-like pictures to help me develop my vision into a motion picture. The message I wanted my animation (in relation to sustainability) to portray was how humans are very quick to replace nature with modern buildings and facilities that aren't necessary. I heard the song Big Yellow Taxi by Counting Crows replaying in my head the whole time whilst creating this artwork, specifically the lyrics "paved paradise and put up a parking lot". I feel as though this artwork embodied these lyrics and portrayed the intended message. Whilst interacting with this program, many ideas to integrate this program into many classroom lessons.

Wandjina Painting Audio

This audio was created after looking into the dreamtime story about the

Wandjina Paintings found in Kimberly, western Australia. The dreamtime story explains how these paintings depict Wandjina who are important creation spirits associated with rain and the regeneration of land and natural resources. First Nations people from along the Kimberly pay homage to Wandjina through ceremonial dances.

In the recording I used a whistling sound from the software that gave a sense of a time long ago, and a sense of longing. I created the sounds of wind and tinder using books a ruler and a pen to create various 'whooshing' sounds and taps. As the Wandjina are directly linked to rain, I wanted this to be represented in the sound I created, hence the sounds of thunder and wind.
Also, within the spoken words of the text, I wanted to again represent the importance of Wandjina and the link this artwork had to rain. I imagine First Nations people painting these depictions of Wandjina with hopes that it would bring rain.
I enjoyed creating this sound scape, however I can't help but feel as though I may be interpreting the First Nations artwork in the wrong way. I would love to learn more about the artworks of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people so that in future I can be certain that their artwork is appropriately represented.
