What are the main characteristics of social facts?
- Social facts consist of expectation, obligation and constraint.

What impact do social facts have on our lives?
- Social facts effect how we form out own personality in our daily lives. They regulate each particular individuals and contribute to human development when an individual is associated with others.

What does Durkheim say about our ability to observe social facts? Make sure you understand what ‘intangible’ and ‘infer’ mean.
- Durkheim made his point that to observe social facts is a difficult task to carry out. How to observe is not to analyze the topic but to use the topic as our objective and observe the particular individuals in that topic. It could be more obvious to carry out this task if instead, the observation is done on a large group of people who behave in similar ways. Durkheim said social facts are invisible and intangible and in observation, needs to be discovered "indirectly", too.

Why could we call Durkheim a 'positivist'
- We could call Durkheim a positivist because he believes in the logical thinking of observation and the way he makes prediction of roles logically as human beings such as the example of observing the role of husband we must not make up, guess, or analyze with our own mind what the role is "supposed to be" but instead, observe the people who carries the particular role.

Q1. Main characteristics of social facts:
- Collective ways of acting, thinking or feeling
- External to the individual, do not originate outside the mind of any particular individual
- Passed from generation to generation
- The collective products of a society as a whole or of particular social groups
- They have a compelling and coercive power

Q2. Social facts affect our behaviours. Although we might feel we are acting and making certain decisions based on our personal choice or on our own free will, we are most likely following a social norm or social pattern that has been a part of our society for a long time. These are influenced by patterns we have become accustomed to through learning, experiencing and training, and what is expected of us are taught to us in the early stages of our lives and become a part of us.

Q3. Social facts are not easily observed and often can only be observed through their effects. They cannot be observed through a physical appearance but have to be understood indirectly. We have to observe different groups of people who have similar actions in order to deduce these social facts. This is what Durkheim means by having to infer social facts based on observation as they are intangible as they are macroscopic.

Q4. A positivist uses a scientific approach to study societies and relies on scientific evidence. Durkheim uses social facts as an object of study, which is similar to an object of study in a scientific experiment.

-They are not unique to particular individuals which is a normal pattern that humans follow.
-The human mind is the place where social facts exist.
-Social facts are the collective result of society.
-Individuals can influence social fact.

-Social facts are the reason why we try to live up to social expectations.
-People want to have good social status because they abide by the social facts of society.

-We can only figure out what the social fact of a particular society is by looking at people’s behaviors.
-It's also invisible, so it can only be interpreted the way the observer wants to interpret it.

-Durkheim can be called a positivist because He thought that by observing a large number of people's who act in a similar way, we may be able to figure out the social facts of a society which is a very scientific approach.

1) main characteristics of social facts:
-social facts are external --> the originate outside the minds of any particular individual
-involve a sense of obligation --> people are likely to be following a pattern that is more general in their society and that they have acquired through learning and training
-collective ways of thinking, acting or feeling which originate outside the consciousness of the individuals who act,
think, or fell in this way.
-constraint
2) Social facts passed down from each generation enable the future generations to influence them and contribute them to their development, but they are only able to do so in association with others. Social facts have a "compelling and coercive power" which ensures strict punishments are delivered to those who break the law to face arrest, trial, imprisonment or execution.
3)He highlights that social facts are very difficult to observe. However, by observing the actions of large number of people who act in similar ways, for example, we may be able to infer the existence of the role of husband. By observing a large number of conversations, we may be able to infer the existence of particular rules of grammar.

4)We could call Durkheim a positivist since his study confines itself to the data of experience and excludes a priori or metaphysical speculations.
