In Lauren Tarshis, "I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967", Mel, Kevin, and Pops all go to Glacier National park and meet up with Aunt Cassie along the way. The night before Aunt Cassie came in, Mel came face to face with a bear, but that wasn't the first time she would encounter a bear. They meet a guy named Steve, who teaches them that the reason the bears are interacting with people was because there was trash everywhere. Later, Mel gets chased by a bear and comes close to death. After that moment, they made sure no more trash made it in that park.

Historical Context

The historical context of this book took place in 1967. During that time everyone was leaving trash around the national park. That eventually led to bears being around people. Those bears where attacking people and someone was killed. After the attacks, a leave no trace rule was made to keep people and animals safe.

This book really made me think about how littering doesn't only affect the ecosystem, but it also can affect you. Just think about if nobody littered, then everyone would be safe and not even have to worry about bears. It also made me think about the bear. They don't need to be eating trash. Things like plastic and aluminum could really hurt them. All in all littering can affect anyone.

This picture shows bears are attracted to trash. Humans that leave trash in the open or litter, could cause bears to come around, and the bears could harm that person. Also, if we do not do something about this bad things will happen.

This picture helps show the theme because litter was being left in Glacier National Park which caused a bear attack. Now there are rules against litter in all parks to help prevent bear, and other animals, to be harmed, or harm humans.
