Amari is intelligent because she learned a new language fast and understands what people mean. On page 111, it says, "Shocked at the question, Amari swallowed hard. If she said no, he might get angry. if she said yes, he might manage to misunderstand her hatred for him. So she pretended she didn't know what he meant." This quote shows that she understood him but felt uncomfortable and didn't want to answer so she was smart with it. not only is she learning a new language fast but she is smart with what she does and says.

1. Amaria's village let people from another village and who were native to her into her village. This is important because being kidnapped from your family and village and going with people who you arent used to is very scary and nerve racking because you dont know whats going to happen to them, " Everyone in the village came out of their houses to see the astonishing sight---pale, unhealthy looking men " ( page 7 ) " Her arms were wrenched behind her, and iron shackles with heavy, rusty chains between them were snapped onto her wrists . . . " ( page 14 )

Another important part in this book is when Amari was captured and put onto a slavery boat. This is important because one minute she was a normal teenage girl, and the next she was being sold into slavery and put on a nasty ship with other men and woman and was horribly treated by the sailors. " Each row of shelves held men--human beings--chained like animals and stacked like logs for the fire, row after row, shelf after shelf" ( page 43 )

The last important part was when Amari was sold off and had to leave her friend, Afi, behind. This is an important part of the book because he had to leave people behind once again all to work for a guy who mean to everyone. " ' sixty pounds for the African girl, ' the voice cried out at last. ' I want her for my son. Today is his sixteenth birthday! ' " ( page 77 )

section 1 : no matter how hard things are they can always get worse. slavery.. the book started normal where Amari is going and getting fruits and then in the next few pages it starts talking about how she was chained up to other people " they were similar to the iron bands on there wrist except these fit around there necks! a length of iron chain connected each neck band, so each was linked to the next in single file line.

Amari is confused because so many new thing are happening to her that are new. She has so many questions to ask. On page 62, it says, "'What will happen when we arrive in their land?' Amari asked" ... "'What do you think it is like there?'" This quotes shows that she is asking many questions and only so many can be answered. She is curious but confused and is wanting to know more. She doesn't know what to think because of what they did to her family and took her away from her village.
