In the 1970s, it was typical to include personal information such as height, weight, and family on your resume.

During the 1970s Laws were passed requiring equal consideration of people based on gender and race, but companies weren't necessarily embracing it. For a good chance at getting a job, it would require many trips to the library to research the company or type up another version of your resume on a typewriter. Wearing attire that was two levels higher than the dress code was a MUST. Finally, getting that top interview is nearly impossible if you didnt have any connections.

When the internet was taking over in the 1990s, about 1 in 5 companies began recruiting online using websites like "CareerBuilder" and "Dice". This lead to passive recruiting where employers reach out to you based on your uploaded resume. With your resume reaching much more people than you anticipated, personal information was withdrawn and replaced with your job history.

During the Great Recession, resumes absolutely flooded the system making almost leading to the very frustrating "screening system" where key words and topics are looked for. Often overlooking qualified candidates, companies were looking for the best. Knowing someone in the company meant that you skip the screening process and you were given a much closer look than others.
