Not everyone was allowed to own land back in the day!)
It's been passed down from generation to generation.  It is surrounded by acres of land,  and usually has several out buildings (barns ,garages, gazebos, cottages for some servants, etc.). The actual land, including the buildings, fields, woods, villages, is called the estate.

The main difference between manor vs mansion is the size of the house and social standing.

  • Mansion – Very large house that is normally at least 5,000 square feet.
  • Manor – Typically larger than a mansion & is the main house on a large property. A manor normally implies some sort of historical significance that is often passed down through generations.

Neoclassical architecture spread in the XVIII century as a reaction to the excesses of the Rococo and Baroque styles. It brought back a new taste for antique simplicity displayed by the proportion and balance of the parts, the perfect ratios, the simplicity of geometric forms, Greek—especially Doric—or Roman detail (like the pediment), dramatic use of columns, and a preference for blank walls.

It is characterized by grandeur of scale, in imposing and majestic palaces usually built to show off the prestige of a royal or upper-class family or a public/governmental palace
