How is the Hollywood version of Frankenstein inaccurate when compared to Mary Shelley's original work?

This isn't like the book because when Victor created the monster he was by himself and no one knew about it and afterwards he was unhappy that he created the monster. - Mich G.

This is absolutely nothing like the book because Victor Frankenstein never had an Igor and he never told anybody about the monster until the end of the book! OH and he was completely disgusted with his creation, not ecstatic! -Ashleigh Anderson

No, this clip is not like the book. In the book the monster is just created then wakes up. There is no dramatic flare like in the clip. Another difference is Victor was alone, in the book, when the monster came to life but in the clip had a crowd watching. -Sarah Mills

In the book, the girl is already in the lake and the monster saves her (due to him being fast, agile, and intelligent. NOT slow, clumsy, and dumb). In the movie, she befriends him and he unintelligently throws her in the lake just like the flowers to see if she floats. I'm unsure whether or not it brings the father back to shoot the creature or if it went into any other detail about the two characters either.

Matthew Perelman

Since it's Hollywood, and they obviously would like to make money, they always are forced to play this scene up in a grand manor so that it keeps the horror/thrilling aspect of a terrifying monster. Back then, it was easier to make him clunky, dumb, and slow since they didn't have the ability to do create the creature portrayed in the book and stick with the overall theme of it without boring the audience. Because of this, they often make it in an evil laboratory with a clear way of how Frankenstein brought him to life, and, in this case, a few spectators. The book is much more dark and mysterious, leaving much up to the reader when it comes to how he comes to life, the atmosphere when it happens, etc.

Matthew Perelman
