Jonas was reading the rules he received for his selection. Jonas was shocked about this rule because his whole life he had been taught never to lie. If you need to keep something secret you may lie to anyone that includes your parents.

The significance of the quote is that it shows that anyone could have been lying to him and he would not know if something said to him is true.

It is important because it is a major event in the story and a new conflict for Jonas. In the real world anyone anyone can be lying to you and you may never know if they are telling the truth or not. This passage had a significant impact only thinking about what is true and what is not. This relates to me because I am having to grow up a lot this year. I am having to make new habits for myself to prepare in my own way to train for adulthood.

Jonas was reading his rules of his assignment that would shape his future life until the final rule shocked Jonas, “you may lie.” Lying was never allowed in the community, this caused Jonas to question many things, like if others had the ability to lie whenever they felt like. In other words, “You are allowed to not tell the truth wherever you feel like.” The author is trying to make us see how big of a deal breaking rules of the community are, with not being allowed to lie seeming to be just a given to people of the community, being able to lie is groundbreaking for Jonas. This quote is so important because it shows how Jonas’s assignment is so important it can even break the most emphasized rule. A real world connection is someone's job requiring them to commit crime that they know shouldn’t be allowed.

When he gets to the last one saying "You may lie." he freaks out, and later even the reciever of memory elder tells him that too. In other words the quote is telling him he can lie to others such as parents or friends. The qauother is trying to make us see how toxic and controlling the elders are. The quote is important because it shows the true nature of the elders. The connects to how the government lies to us to keep us listening to them and safe. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about how the world lies.

Nobody said this, it was a rule made for Jonas. It was a rule for Jonas because he became the keeper of memories and was one of the things he was allowed to do.

Jonas had received his job at the time and there were specific rules he had to follow. So then he read them and found out about the 8 rules he has to follow.

The quote “you may lie” means that he can sometimes lie and slide a bit. It reveals that he can lie sometimes and it'll be okay but then questions if everybody else gout that rule. To me I think the quote means that lying isn’t allowed in their community. It makes me think about the reasons for having such strict rules in place. As Jonas is reading through the instructional folder listing his job requirements he is shocked to see that on the last instruction it reads “8. You may lie.” 68. In other words it means he is in denial that he now has the ability to break an important rule. Since he has never wanted to lie before he is confused about why he would need to lie. The author is trying to make us see that to the community lying is a punishable offense based on how Jonas reacts to reading in his folder. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about lying as a whole and the motivations behind it. In the story, it benefits the adults and the elders for people to obey the rules and to never lie.

This rule is an outrageous one considering that the community has never been able to lie. This quote is very significant because lying is prohibited in Jonas’ community. The idea that all people could potentially also be lying to Jonas is also something that unnerves him, and there is no true way of knowing the answer.

The woman who told the jobs, she said to Jonas after she told him his job. It was on purpose so that he would know what he can do from now on because you can’t lie while you’re a citizen. It is a mature job a responsible one that has to keep you from telling the truth in some ways,Many people are shocked and proud about what Jonas got for his job, The woman says it when they are talking about his job. He is told the quote when he gets his job chosen, they are telling the quote means that if Jonas finds out somethings and the citizens know he may lie to them he can lie about anything he does. It reveals that many of the elders and the people who work for the place know many things and lies to the citizens to keep them protected. It also reveals that there is a conflict involving the place because why would they need to lie to the citizens.hat he can do and what not.I think the quote means to me is like secrets and that can hide unknown subjects. I think that the quote means so much that many people from This world are lying to us to keep us protected or just not wanting to know about subjects that can make citizens argue and bring conflict. When Jonas job was being chosen, The woman who assigned his job says,” You may lie”In other words, saying that if he gets into a problem about something he can lie so he can start to understand his job.The author is making us see that the community has some secrets they haven’t told the citizens because why do you need to lie if the place is organized and safe. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about the book and the secrets it is keeping and about reality because if you think about it many people could be lying to you to keep you safe or to keep you away from important information.

The note that Jonas was given said this. It had the purpose to inform.
Jonas is becoming the new receiver of memory.
The quote means he can lie and it reveals how lying is something that is usually not allowed in the community. It also shows the conflict about how Jonas now has to deal with this fact as the new receiver.
This quote means a tiny bit to me because in our society people lie all the time and it really shows the contrasts and how the book society and ours are different.

This was read by Jonas in a note when the higher ups gave Jonas the notification that he was going to be the receiver of memory.

In other words this was a letter to Jonas.
The tone was frightening and surprising. It was significant because he was getting permission to break a law in their society.
This quote is important because it shows how there is going to be change in the story and how Jonas will now be allowed to break a law for his special job, the receiver of memory. This will change relationships with his friends and family in the story because he will now have to lie about stuff when he has never lied before. This will have a significant impact to Jonas and the story because of these reasons.

When Jonas came back from the Ceremony of Twelves he read the paper that the Elders gave him and one of the guidelines said he may lie.
In other words, Jonas can lie without getting punished like the others that do without permission.
The author is trying to make us see that there might be a time where Jonas needs to because Jonas can not speak of certain things where that can get him in trouble.
This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how this can impact his training and his job as The Receiver of Memories. Besides the story lying is taken seriously and is taken as a bad thing because others use lying in an inappropriate way.
