You already used a ruler to measure items in your house. This is one tool scientist use.

Write an expository (teaching) paragraph. Describe ways that a scientist uses various tools. You might focus on other ways that scientists measure linear data with rulers. You might pick a different science tool on which to focus such as a scale, timer, or thermometer. You may even want to write more than one paragraph!

Begin with a main idea that states the tool you are writing about. Use details to explain how and when this tool is used.

Think about the experiments we have completed in class. How did we measure speed when we were building Hotwheel tracks? When we created our penguin houses how did we determine if they were successful? What tools did we need? Hint: timers, rulers, thermometers, scales, etc.

Find the Eday folder. Open the document called "Math Data" and write below the data you collected!

We have studied heat transfer, heat insulators, and heat conductors. Remember the problem with keeping diet Coke cans cold? Can you insulate ice cubes from home to keep them around longer?

Procedure:
1. Find three identical cups or glasses.

2. Wrap each cup or glass in a material that you believe will reduce heat transfer and keep the ice from melting. We tried things like paper towel, aluminum foil, a cotton sock or plastic wrap.

3. Make a hypothesis. Identify the three materials that you are using. Tell which one will be the best insulator and keep the ice around the longest. Record this in One Note.

4. Use 3 ice cubes, and put in one of the cups. Repeat this for the remaining cups.

5. Observe the cups throughout the day.

6. Develop a conclusion. As the ice cubes begins to melt, compare the results you see with your hypothesis.
Include the following in your conclusion:
*Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect?
*Which material was the best insulator?
*Which material was the best conductor?
*Based on your observations, what other materials would also be good insulators?
*Based on your observations, what other materials would also be good conductors?

Find the Eday folder. Open the document called "Heat Insulators" and record your conclusions!
