I used individual conferences last year and that worked well. Students were assigned homework according to their abilities. Students were assigned task that were challenging and placed in mixed ability groups. Although I used standardized assessments, I used observations as well to make assignments. We have a school-wide standard in reading - the accelerated reading program. Students are encouraged to read for enjoyment, so they choice according to their interest. I observe that interest and try to incorporate in task assigned. Often, I encourage students to work outside the class when they can.

Yes, I consider cultural differences. We have students who speak English as a second language. For example, there was one student who scored above average in Math but struggled in Language Arts. As teaches,r we must recognize ways to assist students who are deficient because of a language barrier.
