Since, the discovery of gold in California more and more ethnic groups such as Mexicans, Germans, Chileans, and Chinese came to mine the gold. The people from California soon came to find out that all the foreigners were taking up the "easy gold". California then passed a tax of all foreigners living there and mining. This made many people upset causing them to leave except the Chinese. California took people in who had something to offer. The more people came the more land they took from the natives. The natives were humiliated and killed by the people taking the land from them. Miners thought it was cheating to have slaves help them mine, so the african americans were well off there.

Before 1850, when the gold was not found yet, the population was very low, like almost nobody lived there. However, after the gold was found(gold rush), a lot more people started to move in for money/gold. Since then, the population grew rapidly from 1850(CA population ave: 90,000) to 1880(CA population ave: around 900,000).

The gold was running out in California and people were becoming frustrated so many left. Those who stayed behind may have started gambling and, or robbing others. People got arrested and the prisons were getting full meaning public hanging were common. Eventually many gave up on their dream and went back east, and those who stayed back either became lucky or stayed there and most never returned to their loved ones.

There were several reports of gold found in California. Because of this, there was no way for people to be lying about it. Horace Greeley said, "Fortune lies upon the earth as plentiful as the mud in our streets." This means that you can easily find the gold if you just look. Many people were even willing to leave their families behind just to get fortunate. People in the East were also inspired to move West after hearing about it.

You could have gone around South America, through the Panama shortcut, or across America. Dangers of going around South America were seasickness, food and water going rancid and and travelers had to wait months and months with nothing to do. People took this route because they lived so far out east it would've taken even longer to go across the U.S. and Panama had to many dangers. The "Get Rich Quick" men and women went through Panama despite the risk of diseases like Malaria and Cholera. They even had the risk of getting stranded. Finally, going across America might have been shorter in distance, but it wasn't sorter in time, Families often underestimated the difficulty of the journey which included lack of water.

The California Gold Rush begins with three people

John Sutter was a Swiss immigrant who dreamed of controlling an agricultural empire. He was the wealthiest man in California. Many years later, he found gold on his ranch and the gold rush instantly started. James Marshall stumbled upon
gold at his sawmill construction job. He took samples of it back to Sutter's Fort and they concluded that it was gold. Both Marshall and Sutter kept this a secret from everyone because they didn't want people coming onto their lands mining for gold. The news about the discovery soon got out, but people believed that it was to good to be true. Sam Brannan was a local merchant and a skilled crafts man who wanted to make a profit off of the gold rush. He ran through the streets announcing that the discovery was not a joke. Then he bought every single tool that people needed to find gold and he sold them back to the people for more than they were worth.

Anyone with a few simple tools and was willing to work hard could be successful. Another way California was unique was its lack of any meaningful government. The price of of the supply would go up if there is a high demand, and the price of the supply would go down if there was a low demand. John Sutter did not care for the gold, he cared more for the farming and agriculture. Women found their home-making skills in high demand for all the men who had no experience with cooking or cleaning.
