I think O’Flaherty wrote this story to convey a realistic sniper back in that time period and show how much regret that the sniper felt from killing others. I think he maybe showed that to maybe show how violence isn’t the answer to everything and people shouldn’t kill. One evidence I have to show that is evidence to this theory is that when it said “The lust of battle died in him. He became bitten by remorse. “ it showed that the character did show a lot of regret towards what he was doing and that he wishes he had never killed anyone. Another reason I think he wrote it to show that violence isn’t the answer is because he said “His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody.” I think it showed that in the end of all of the killing and war, you are only ending up with anger and hate. I think that these show that the author does not believe in violence and is trying to teach other people that they shouldn’t believe in violence either.

My strategies for determining why the author wrote the story is by reading the end and beginning very closely. I see what the difference is between the two and how the character developed in any way or how the plot line or something like that developed as well. Then I use that information and wonder why the author made that change and what it could represent in that certain story line.

Another weird thing is that he could see all of these small details from far away.

A man in the castle came out and introduced himself as Zoroff. Then he later told about how he liked to hunt but then all of the animals were too easy to kill and how he decided to kill humans instead because they are more intelligent.

Such as in the sniper, the sniper was trying to kill others and escape alive. Then in the Occurrence, Peyton was trying to escape from being hung off of the bridge. Then in the Most Dangerous game, Rainsford is trying to escape off of the island by not having General Zoroff kill him.
