The Role of Women Post-World War II

World War II saw an increase in female employment throughout Canada. Most of the able-bodied men had been sent to fight in Europe and the Pacific against the Axis forces and women were required to step into replace them. Women took jobs in what were male dominated fields and in ammunitions factories among others. These women were essential to the success of the war effort and running of society. When the war ended and the men came home there was a new problem: would the women keep their jobs or would the men have the right to them and what did this mean for the women who relied on those jobs or enjoyed them? It can be argued at there was a societal push in the 1950s towards the "housewife" ideal and cult of motherhood which persuaded women back into the home and out of the workplace.

What is your opinion on women and work in the post-World War II society? Do you believe there was a push to get them back into the home, was it a matter of making room for those men or for example, did the baby-boom factor in? Discuss.

Looking as this question the first thing I think of is what was the economy post world war II? It seems to be quite simple to be that any individual who left their current job to go fight or participate in the war should be entitled to have their job again upon coming home. After that is it SHOULD go to whoever is best qualified for the job whether that individual be male or female. However as history has shown us the best qualified does not always get the position which is unfortunate. In addition i do believe that there was increase population reproduction or the "baby boom" which statically would reduce the number of females in the workforce.
