El seu nom en llatí significa "planta del gener". 
És una planta herbàcia perenne, robusta, que pot  arribar a fer un metre d'alçada. Són plantes molt ramificades, amb branques ascendents.
El fruit és un aqueni. Floreix entre juny i setembre.
