JOHN WEST --- "Bear fight ad" SEE RIGHT

A few years ago the company John West created an advert with a bear fishing and a man runs towards it and fights the bear for a fish. This advert is interesting because it uses documentary styled camera techniques such as zooming in to the bear at 0:02 to 0:05, uses a narrator to narrate what is happening and uses grainy footage to make the audience feel as if they are watching a verisimilitude documentary, when in fact they are watching a mockumentory.

The target audience for this advert could possibly be parents of children because is it humorous and sticks in your mind, the reason it could also be for parents is that when the advert was aired it was shown relatively early in the day and mainly at lunchtimes, a time when people are having lunch.

The psychographics of this advert would be people on the go, or for people who make their lunch early in the day and then take it with them for work/school/if they attending hobby related functions. The demographic niche audience for this product would possibly be perhaps women from all ages but I believe this advert was mainly aimed at the middle class white community because of the actor used in the advert being white, it could appeal more to that community.

The advert uses composition techniques such as the rule of thirds to allow the action to happen in the middle of the screen, the fight scene rarely moves to either side or at the top or bottom of the screen. Most of the shots in the advert are handheld, the camera is never fixed at steady place making the footage shake slightly and again gives it the documentary style feel.

Towards the end of the advert the editing of the film cuts to a foreground focus of a John West red salmon can the product the company is trying to sell, the can is placed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, in line with the left hand side of the rule of thirds sections. In the background the man picks up the fish after kicking the bear and walks off, this shot is unfocussed but you can still clearly see the footage in the background behind the can.

As part of Unit 2 I had to create a ten questioned survey to produce quantitative results for my research in different adverts. The first advert I used was the growing concern for pregnant women not being able to have a seat on public transport, the other advert was of the WWF and the concerns of climate change. Here is a copy of my questionnaire;

3D analysis - "Workplace Pension"

Workplace Pension

The advert starts with the camera zooming in slightly and tilting down to an establishing shot to reveal the character 'Workie' walking along a footpath in a park, he is walking along smiling, it transitions into a long shot of him walking down the pathway, the narrator addresses Workie as an 'unmissable chap', the narrator is personifying him and making him sound like he is a human to make the audience feel sorry for him later on in the advert.

Straight after this shot it quickly transitions to a mid shot of Workie with a sad face because everyone is ignoring him a man rides past on his bicycle and ignores him, the point the company is trying to make (the company is trying to get people to not ignore the workplace pension and to get involved with it).

The next scene is a mid shot of a man sitting down on a bench on the phone. A long shot then establishes that Workie sits down next to him and tries to get the young mans attention whilst the narrator is addressing the audience with dialogue (This guy owns his own business, as an employer he should look at the workplace pension, he will need to offer one, its the law), the narrator is offering advice to the audience without the audience consciously knowing it.

Workie looks over at the man hoping he looks up at him, but instead (the camera is positioned tilting upwards (low angle shot)) of the man turning away and swapping the phone he is talking into to his other hand this tells the audience sometimes employers can be shown in a obnoxious and manipulative light, Workie is rather angry and upset and continues on his journey.

The next shot is a long shot/extreme long shot of two child-minding nannies with children, they stop before a lake in the park and look out, Workie's fluffy leg comes into shot slightly (on the left hand side). The next shot is also a long shot/extreme long shot, possibly a 180 degree rule shot as Workie walks towards the nannies emerging through the trees.

There is a close up of birds flying out of the trees where Workie has brushed past some branches causing the birds to fly away. The next shot is a mid shot of the 'main' nanny turning around to see maybe why the birds and flown out of the tree, she turns around and looks almost through Workie, and like the others, she ignores him just the same.

After this shot there is an over the shoulder/establishing shot/mid shot of the 'main' nanny turning back around to face the children and the other nanny in which she points out towards the lake (in the shot the main nanny, the other nanny, a little boy and a pram with small toddlers, Workie is also present) the narrator is still commenting on how the nannies would benefit from becoming familiar with the workplace pension.

Workie shakes his head and his pupils dilate, showing his frustration and sadness that no one is recognising him. Workie then is presented walking away from the nannies in a long shot. The next scene is of Workie and a little dog (long shot/full body shot) looking at each other, it jump cuts to an extreme close up of the dog slightly smiling at Workie and then cuts back to Workie (close up) smiling back at the little dog, his eyes widened, finally someone has noticed him - Workie's fur seems brighter and more colourful in this shot due to the editing to portray a sense of happiness for Workie.

The last shot is of Workie walking away and past the little dog in a long shot, white text is then displayed over the footage (overlay) of him walking away to display a public message which is what the companies final message is.

Here is the YouTube video of the advert;

3D analysis - "Binge drinking VCCP"

VCCP Binge drinking advert - female version

The advert starts off with a black screen, it fade transitions into the first shot which is a long shot of a young woman getting dressed. There is background music in this advert, the song 'I just wait' by Paloma Faith, l believe it foreshadows the advert because some of the lyrics include "The twinkling in your eyes makes me wonder if I'm dead or alive" - this particular lyric in the song could portray the ways alcohol can make you feel, this advert also has a level of uncertainty about it, it makes the audience feel uncomfortable in a way because the advert almost starts backwards.

This shot (long shot) continues as the girl gets dressed, she pulls up a pair of black tights in a very dark lit room, the high key lighting in the room is the only real light in the shot. The next shot is of the girl in a close up shot of her shoulders and head, she is pulling up the tights (although the audience cannot see this action, they are lead to believe this is what's happening).

After this shot, there is a matched action shot and close up of her adjusting the tights and seemingly ripping them wide open, the folley sound of the ripping is enhanced in this shot, however the background music is still playing.

The next shot reverts back to the long shot similar to the one at the beginning, she adjusts the tights again and the camera switches to a mid shot where she is putting on a blueish green top, the next shot is a over the shoulder mirror shot of her adjusting the top and making it sit right on her body.

The camera moves to an extreme close up of her walking out of her bedroom and ripping the top wide open to reveal her bra, under the theory of Laura Mulvey (Mulvey's Male Gaze theory is the theory that when certain woman's features are shown in film, the audience is put into the perspective of a heterosexual man and they look at the woman's features).

She walks past the camera in the extreme close up and also walks past a mirror hanging on the wall, unknowingly to the audience, this is actually a shot (a mirror shot obviously), she undoes a clip holding her hair up, the lights around the mirror illuminate her face, this is the only source of light in this scene.

The next shot consists of a close up of her hand, her hand is focused on a ring she is wearing and the folley sounds of her being sick can be heard whilst they are enhanced, you cannot actually see the actress being 'sick'. It switches to a long shot of her bending over the sink still being sick, the audience cannot see her face and Mulvey's theory could also be applied here too (video reference).

Also a mirror shot, she lifts up her head to reveal she has vomit in her hair, she plays with her hair and walks out of the bathroom into her bedroom again whilst wiping her eye and smudging the eye make-up she is wearing. A mid shot of the young woman reveals she then wipes her hand across her mouth, distorting the lipstick/lip gloss she is wearing. Straight after this she pulls a pair of yellow shorts from the side of her mirror, a close up then sees her pulling them up. The background music is still playing.

A mirror shot close up in her bedroom is next in this scene, she turns around slowly whilst the camera zooms out and is angled low in front of the mirror, turns round fully and wipes her hands on the shorts, it is revealed to the audience that she appears to have urinated on herself and there is a dark wet patch on the shorts.

The is a close up of her opening a wine bottle, the sound of the pop of the bottle has been enhanced, the camera then switches to a long shot of the woman pouring the wine over a coat, a mid shot shows her sitting down on a chair (her coat is on), she then pulls off the heel off of one of her high-heeled shoes, the camera tilts upwards to reveal a satisfied look on the woman's face.

There is a long shot next of the woman walking with all of her ruined clothes on (the ripped tights, wine stained coat and the broken shoes) she struggles to walk in the shoes as the appears to walk away from the camera. She walks past another mirror in her house and and walks backwards to view herself in it. A mid shot then captures her ruffling her hair and checking her makeup before she opens the door ready to go out.

An overlay of white text appears over the footage and reads "You wouldn't start a night like this" she opens the door and walks through it before the next piece of white text is shown, "so why end it that way". this is a powerful message to the audience about being careful what your state to come home is like, if you don't want to go out like a complete mess, then why go out like one?

The advert ends with a still image of the porch where the actress has just left, the logo of the Home Office (also an overlay) is shown in white and also the final message "Alcohol - know your limits" which is an important last message for the audience to see, this advert is very effective and will definitely persuade the audience to think about their actions on a night out.

A link to the YouTube video can be found below;
