There was Auschwitz just behind the Sola River, then just past that there were workshops and a camp extension, and finally Birkenau right behind that. It was maybe 2 miles from Auschwitz to Birkenau. In Auschwitz there were around 20,000 prisoners and 5 times as many in Birkenau.

The Different Types of Jobs

There were many different jobs the workers occupied in Auschwitz. There were people doing laundry, people working in tin shops, shoemakers, bakers, and much much more.

How People Survived

People survived in Auschwitz by taking jobs available to them. They would be rational with the food that was given to them, and eat everything given to them. Prisoners would have to obey soldiers at all times to avoid getting shot. Also, for some people seeing their spouses would give them strength.

1. The constant fear of being killed by a soldier at any given second.
2. How crowded and uncomfortable the camps were.
3. Not being able to see family and friends ever again.
