We learned in unit 1 that the Great lakes and St lawrence lowlands is located to the East of Canada, southern Quebec and Southeast of Ontario. It has rich agriculture, warm climate, and it was shaped by large glaciers. In unit 1 we also learned about natural disasters and how they effect certain places. Natural disasters are major events resulting from natural proccesses of the earth. Natural disasters happen when natural disasters meet vulnerability. In the Great lakes and St lawrence lowlands flooding is pretty common. The flooding is caused by water levels and extreme weather like rainfall and snowmelt being combined. We have lots of water, not many big mountains, and flat lowlands which the water levels may change due to bad weather causing it to flood.

In unit 2 we learned about mining. Mining is removing minerals from the earth, these minerals are usally found in rocks. There are two types of mining. Surface mining is where you mine ore containing minerals found close to the earths surface. You can use draglines, hydraulic shovels, bucket-wheel excavators, and blast- hole drills. Underground mining is where you mine ore containing minerals deep beneath the earths surface. you can use drills, loaders, conveyor belts, haul trucks, ventalation systems, and roof bolters. Another topic that we covered in unit 2 is the 4 sectors of industry. The 4 industrys are primary- a sector of industry that extracts raw materials that eventually get processed or manufactured into a finished product. Secondary- takes raw materials and changes them into things that we use. Tertairy- Involves the provision of services to businesses as well as finacial consumers. Quanternary-munses modern technology in research and development to train and provide information to other industries. Primary is the first out of 4 sectors. Primary is the process of extracting raw minerals from various depths beneath the surface. Mining and the primary sector both involve taking minerals from the earth.

Unit 2 we learned about fishing. This unit talked about aquaculture. Aquaculture is the farming of fish. You raise and harvest in all types of water enviroments in controlled conditions. We also covered farming in unit 2. There are different types of farming determind by natural factors and economic factors. Intense farming is in densely populated areas, small farms that need large investments, and products are perishable. Extensive farming is in low density areas, large farms that make good profits, and products are less perishable. Both fishing and farming need sustainable harvesting to survive long-term. Aquaculture is farming but is done in the water and not on land.

Unit 1 we learend that the 7 landform regions are a physical feature of the earths surface. The Canadian Shield is the largest region and is in the precambrian era and has the longest exposed mass of precambrian rocks. It is located in eastern and centeral Canada. Conatins the oldest rocks on earth. The Canadian shield has many natural resources such as lead, nickel, copper, gold and more.

We went over the 6 factors of climate in unit 1. wind and air masses is one 1 of the 6. They deliver temperature and percipitation to other areas. The wind can also pick up a be really strong due to the temperature, pressure, and the moisture above large bodies of water. We went over forestry in unit 2. There are 3 different types of cutting. clear cutting which removes every tree and leaves, selective cutting, only mature trees that are the desired size or type, and strip cutting which involves clear cutting only part of an old growth forest . If the wind is strong enough it could cause the trees to break and be damaged in several ways.

In unit 1 we learned about the rock cycle. We talked about igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, real world uses, locations in Canada and the cycle. Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. sedimintary rocks are formed from the accumulation and compression of sediments. Metamorphic rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks that have went through heat and pressure changes. We also learned about the continental drift. The continental drift is Alfred wegners 4 theorys about the earths continents once being combined. The puzzle evidence is the continents fit together like a puzzel. Fossil evidence is similar fossils were found on different continents meaning that had to be joined at some point. Geological evidence is the mountains being similar in age. Finally, the glacial evidence is some continents were once cold enough for ice to cover them indicating they were once further south. Igneous, sedimentary, and metemorphic rocks are used to help Alfreds theory because these rocks that are different ages and formations were found on some of the continents that are now separated by oceans.

Ethnic enclaves are an area with a large amount of people who celebrate their traditions and keep their culture alive even when they arent in their home country. Little Italy is located in Toronto. In little Italy they celebrate the Feas of San Gennaro they also have a large amount of festivals and feasts. In unit 3 we also talked about the development of countries. We talked about countries that are more developed than others and what makes a country more or less developed. Developed countries have better health care, education, and transportation. The countries that are less developed dont have the funds from their government to support good health care, education and transportation. This makes their health care, education, and transportation not as benificial. Ethnic enclaves tend to go to more developed countries. They go here to provide them a better life and these enclaves develop better when the country is more developed.

Push factors are a negative condition or circumstance that makes people want to leave their country or region for example lack of jobs, overpopulation, economy, and no clean drinking water. Pull factors are conditions that attract people to live in another country or region. Places in Canada like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have good push and pull factors. We talked about immigrants and what they are. Immigrants are people who comes from another country. When immigrants come from another country its due to push factors like not having many job oppertunities, studying abroad, or maybe because of climate change. Immigrants look for places with good pull factors like better living standards, political freedom, and better education. Immigrants are always looking at push and pull factors.

Most people live in urban areas because there are more oppertunities and things to do since it is the city and rural areas are more out in the country. Land uses are the purpose or function of the land, how it is used, and the activities that take place on it. There are many different types of land uses like residential which are houses/apartments, transportational which are roads and highways, open space which are cemetery's and wood lots, there are many more different land uses. Urban areas have a lot of land uses like institutional which are hospitals, places of worship, commercial which are stores, industrial which are factories, facilities and these are only a few urban areas have a lot more land uses. Rural areas don't have nearly as many land uses than urban areas dobut they have agriculture, residential, transportational and maybe a few more.

Carbon footprints is the measurement of how much greenhouse gasses that are being released into the atmosphere due to our actions. Driving, using electricity, and food choices like eating meat release greenhouse gases. We also talked about ways to reduce this by using public transportation, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable products. In this unit we also talked about sustainable communities. A sustainable community is a place designed to protect the environment while making sure that everyone has a good quality of life and future. Sustainable communities aim to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are being released and focus on things like energy efficiency, renewable resources like using solar, wind and geothermal energy, they might also use biomass for heating, and they reduce waste.

Some places have more people in it than others. Population density is the measuerment of how many people live in a certain area. It is measured by a locations population divided by its area in square kilometers. Unit 4 we talked about eco-friendly prodcuts/ packaging. Eco-friendly products are made to minimize their enviromental impacts from manufacturing all the way to disposing. Eco-friendly packaging is made to be recycled and easy to dispose. It is also made from materials that were manufactured using minimal impact on energy consumption or natural resources. Areas that have a high population density could benefit most from eco-friendly products and packaging because they help reduce waste and pollution. This will give us a better enviromental outcome by giving us healthier living conditions which will effect where people choose to live. Areas with less pollution could become more popular which can affect population distributionn and density overtime.
