By being an outsider, he is separate from the group, “Separate and unatoned, while the others were being fused into the Greater Being . . .” (86).He was not part of the bigger group, he did not feel connected to other people he was alone. He also fears that some women don’t like him as much as others as you can see in this quote, “ . . . She turned away and addressed herself to the more sporting an on her left” (79). This quote reveals how he feels pushed to the side and is made an undesirable by women around him. Another worry Bernard has is how people of lower castes don't take him seriously. He struggles with this a lot, “Each time he found himself looking on the level, instead of downward, into a Delta’s face, he felt humiliated” (64). he was humiliated because they did not take him seriously due to the stigma of the appearance in their society, he looked like an undesirable so they treat him like one.

He tries to make up for his physicality by being forceful but that still doesn't work to get people to listen to him. He is not secure in his caste as Alpha, "Bernard gave his order in the sharp, rather arrogant and even offensive tone of one who does not feel himself too secure in his superiority” (64). This quote reveals that Bernard gives off a vibe in which he is not secure in his position, because of how he is viewed.  He voices things in an "offensive tone" in order to try to tell them he is higher than them, but it only makes him even more isolated and less secure of himself. Bernard feels like an outsider in the world he lives in and the only one who he is safe around himself . He isolates himself in order to not have a connection to the society, “‘And then he spends most of his time by himself- alone.’” (45). His physical features are not common in his caste, actually he is quite opposite of his caste. He is described as,  “so ugly...And then so small” (46). The Alphas are usually strong, tall and good looking but, Bernard is not any of those qualities. He is compared to a person of a lower caste, “Bernard’s physique was hardly better than that of the average Gamma” (65).
