"In a cultivated voice marked by a slight accent that gave it added precision and deliberateness..." (Connel 21)
The author describes Zaroff's voice, giving him a look of formality and seriousness. He also seems elegant, in a way, and noble.

" 'A simple fellow, but, I'm afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage... He is a Cossack.' said the general, and his smile showed red lips and pointed teeth. 'So am I.' " (Connel 21)
Zaroff subtly reveals a bit about himself (indirect characterization). The author begins to hint that Zaroff is not as noble as he seems, and could do something "savage" as he says he is.

" 'It's a game, you see,' pursued the general blandly. 'I suggest to one of them that we go hunting... If my quarry eludes me for three whole days, he wins the game. If I find him' -the general smiled- 'he loses.' " (Connel 28)
Zaroff is now portrayed as uncaring and even a bit evil as he refers to hunting people as a game.

"Rainsford held his breath. The general's eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face...then he turned his back along the tree and walked carelessly away, back along the trail he had come"
"Rainsford's second thought was even more terrible. It sent a shudder of cold horror through his whole being. Why had the general smiled? Why had he turned back?" (Connell 31).

-Both of these quotes paint an image of some of the actions General Zaroff did in the that added to his personality and characterization. In this scene, Zaroff turned away and smiled deviously after spotting Rainsford up on a tree. Zaroff enjoyed "playing" with Rainsford and allowing him to live for a while longer would give more joy to Zaroff. The readers will think that Zaroff is even more evil, savage individual. Although these qualities seem negative, it gives the reader a reason why to continue reading; the tension and anxiety put onto the reader is what makes this story so thrilling.

"Rainsford's first impression was that the man was singularly handsome; his second was that there was an original, almost bizarre quality about the general's face. He was a tall man past middle age, for his hair was vivid white; but his thick eyebrows and pointed military moustache were as black as the night from which Rainsford had come. His eyes, too, were black and very bright. He had high cheekbones, a sharp-cut nose, a spare, dark face, the face of a man used to giving orders, the face of an aristocrat" (Connell 21).

-This is a direct excerpt of the story that describes the appearance of General Zaroff. Due to phrases such as "almost bizarre quality of the general's face," it gives the reader a sense of suspicion and mystery every time Zaroff is mentioned in the text. Small phrases listed above drives the audience to read more to figure out what will happen next. It also develops an overall mood and adds to aspects of foreshadowing. The author builds more of this mystery as Zaroff talks more about the most dangerous game, and it keeps the hearts of the audience pumping rapidly.

General Zaroff had an effect on several people throughout the story. He has affected the many humans he murdered as well as Ivan and Rainsford. In addition to the sailors he has killed, he also influenced the lives of their families, who would be distraught to never know how or where they died. He has a direct effect on Ivan, since Ivan lives with him and is his servant. He had impact on Rainsford in the way that through his hunting "game," Rainsford saw from the prey's point of view, which could forever change his outlook on hunting.

General is a static, but important character. He is a Cossack, who, as he describes, is " 'A simple fellow, but, I'm afraid, like all his race, a bit of a savage...' " He bought the island for the sole purpose of his pleasure, showing that he is a bit selfish. In addition, he uses the island to hunt people, portraying that he is evil, or uncaring of whose life he takes. He is the protagonist in the story "The Most Dangerous Game."
