This song's meaning was that the slaves were getting ready to travel up north to escape.
 
The slaves would sing this song to let the others know that they were preparing to take a group to freedom.

One hidden message was that "gospel train" was code for underground railroad. Another was when the song was sung slaves instantly knew a conductor, person who translated the slaves, was with them. One last hidden message was that the slave masters thought nothing of it because it was part of the slaves daily routine to sing spirituals.
