Many COAs tend to blame themselves for their care
taker's alcohol abuse and their family's dysfunction
ality. Some of these young people believe that if they
were "better" and earned all A's, their parent's alco
hol abuse would cease. This may lead to feelings of
guilt and shame because of their inability to "fix"
their family. Therefore, these students may have low
self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness

The family climate that a COA is raised in is often
controlling, which reinforces family members' feel
ings of powerlessness. As a result, COAs tend to feel
that they have an external locus of control where
they are unable to affect external events. Therefore,
they see themselves as being controlled by external
forces with little ability to cause change. Addition
ally, this external focus is related to lower levels of
self-identity and self- awarenes

Children of alcoholics are usually raised in an abusive or aggressive environment that lead children to feelings of shame and guilt for their inability to fix their dysfunctional households. Tess, from the beginning of the book, has a low level of self identity, that is characterized by her tendency to blame herself for situations out of her control.

Tess is unable to be dependent because she has been raised to think that external forces direct her life rather she making her own decisions. She feels powerless after Alec which leads her to work at the dairy farm and eventually marry Angel. When Angel leaves her, she feels shame and guilt and blames herself for situations she could never control. She feels responsible for all the bad things that have happened to her which finally drives her insane and leads her to kill Alec.

Relating these symptoms to Tess, she feels like if she were "better" (still a virgin or Alec dead) she would be able to live with Angel and he would fall in love with her again. She clearly has a low self esteem and a sense of worthlessness because she can't even see that she is better off alone than with Angel who will never fully love her for who she is.

"Tess’ first thought was to put the still living birds out of their torture, and to this end with her own hands she broke the necks of as many as she could find, leaving them to lie where she had found them till the gamekeepers should come, as they probably would come, to look for them a second time. “Poor darlings—to suppose myself the most miserable being on earth in the sight o’ such misery as yours!” she exclaimed, her tears running down as she killed the birds tenderly."
