I think this means that God and grace are obviously felt in LOTR, though they are not explicitly shown. I think Tolkien was saying in the letter that he didn't mean to put Catholic subjects in the story at first, but then God worked through him to bring aspects of the faith into the story. God used Tolkien as an instrument to teach people about the Catholic faith and His grace. This captures the essence of how the Catholic Imagination views the world, because Catholics know that although the world is broken, God still uses it to bring us His grace and divine power.

Deprived means that someone is suffering due to a lack of something important. Depraved means morally corrupt, or wicked. Some Protestant Catholics view the world as being depraved because of the wickedness of men. Catholics, on the other hand, believe that God's grace is essential for our salvation. So, although humans are sinful and wicked, God still uses us to carry His message throughout the world, and we can still receive His grace.

One example of a symbol in LOTR that points to Catholicism is the ring. The ring is a symbol that represents Original Sin. It is evil, and it needs to be destroyed, like how Original Sin was destroyed by Jesus. A second example of a symbol that points to aspects of Catholicism is the date when the ring is destroyed in LOTR. It is destroyed on March 25, which is the date of the Annunciation, when Mary said "yes" to the angel. It is also the date of the Crucifixion of Jesus, which is when Satan was defeated. A third example of a symbol that points to Catholicism in LOTR is Frodo's journey to destroy the ring. He has to climb Mount Doom (which represents Golgotha) to destroy the ring (which represents Original Sin), and in doing so, he saves the world from evil (sin). Frodo also represents Jesus, who destroyed Original Sin and saved the world from sin.

These two planes become indistinguishable (ordinary with extraordinary); they don’t clash with one another.
The elvish cloaks are an example of this phenomenon because the reader wonders if the cloaks are magic or not. They are woven out of materials of the earth, but they carry supernatural properties with them.

The Lembas Bread is different then how Catholics understand the Eucharist because for Catholics, the Eucharist is derived from regular bread and then consecrated by a priest within the Mass. The bread becomes the Body of Christ. The consecration is preceded by a gathering of intentionally worshipping people. The Lembas Bread is given in a singular occurrence. There is no priest, no liturgy, no divinity; there is no god prayed to or worshipped, and there is no evidence that anyone thought that there was a god present in the bread. Father Charles says that it can still be seen as sacramental because it comes from the earth, and it is a visible sign of an invisible reality.
